Under the direction of the Sr. Manager, Engineering the Engineering Manager will work with a portfolio of three to five food plants to develop overall capital plans and lead the execution of the capital plans. This position works collaboratively with local plant teams, the engineering organization, cross functional partners, and the business team to determine the optimized technical and business solutions that will enable new products, increase employee safety, improve food safety, increase operational effectiveness, and/or drive cost savings. This position requires management of both external and internal resources. The individual must have a good working knowledge of technology employed in the food industry and understand how the application of the technologies impacts operations and other stakeholders. This person will be a resource and will organize resources as needed to help solve difficult technical issues that occur in operations.

Job Description:

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leads and develops capital plans for assigned plants in collaboration with plant, business, and cross functional leaders. This position requires a significant understanding of the business operations of a food company, as well as the ability to effectively communicate with and lead cross-functional resources.

  • Leads overall effort to execute capital plan by developing the necessary resources, internal and/or contract to ensure the proper project management is in place to drive flawless project executions. Individual projects will generally be $3M or less, some of which will need to be managed directly.

  • Leads and supports projects through ideation and stage gating, scoping, approval, final engineering/design, equipment selection and procurement, construction, and commissioning, qualification, and validation.

  • Generates and implements technical solutions that will increase employee safety, further drive our ESG agenda, improve food safety and food quality, increase operational effectiveness, and drive top line (innovation) and bottom line (cost savings) growth.

  • Leads and supports project development and the presentation of capital authorization documents that are complete, clear, concise, and reflect thorough due diligence to ensure project success. Depending on project complexity, this includes, but is not limited to:

  • Technology assessment and recommended solutions

  • Physical location and general arrangement placements

  • Process Flow Diagrams & Mass Balances

  • Line design and determination of operational factors

  • Utility and infrastructure requirements and needs-assessment

  • Development of capital project cost estimates

  • Development of project schedule, from concept to completion

  • Equipment / System Performance criteria

  • Identification of Alternatives, Pre-requisites, Risks, and Opportunities

  • Ensures projects for assigned plants meet agreed KPIs, including safe implementation, quality of installation, on-time delivery, project scope objectives and delivery on budget with a managed cash flow. Provide Engineering and Finance with monthly project spending forecasts.

  • Develops Business Case Screening scopes and cost estimates to give the business team a directional view of a project and the robustness of the business case.

  • Provides leadership, resources, and on-site troubleshooting to support resolution of plant related technical issues. Partners with local safety, environmental, maintenance, quality, sanitation, CI, Reliability, and operations teams to drive continuous improvement.

  • Keeps current with latest food processing technology, industry regulations, and industry standards.

Qualifications/ Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BS or MS degree in an engineering discipline or other equivalent experience.

  • Formal project management training or certifications are positives.

  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience, preferably with a minimum of five years in food manufacturing. Pasta or other dry goods manufacturing experience is a plus.

  • Proven experience in leading and executing capital plans and projects across multiple plants.

  • Proven effectiveness in working collaboratively across the spectrum of plant and corporate stakeholders.

  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.

  • Understanding of lean manufacturing concepts

  • Working knowledge of sanitary equipment design, Good Manufacturing Practices and Government regulations as they apply to food manufacturing operations (i.e. OSHA, EPA, FDA, GMP).

  • Excellent leadership qualities, verbal and written communication skills, technical analysis, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills are required.

  • Proficient with AutoCAD, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Power Point, and MS Project

Travel Requirements: 25% - 50%
