This position will serve as a Transportation Supervisor I in the Harnett County Maintenance Unit. This position will be responsible for supervision of one or more crews in the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads including, but not limited to: working in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment and with power tools to perform pavement patching, drainage maintenance, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. You will assist management with investigating and answering concerns from the public. The work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions and the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes utilizing NCDOT required Proper Protective Equipment, following OSHR and NCDOT Safety Policy and Procedure Manual. This position must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. It will be responsible for assisting management with the counsel and discipline of employees; monitoring of expenditures; maintaining work records, time sheets, job reports, and inventory records; planning work operations and adjusting work assignments; training employees on-the-job; conducting performance reviews; assisting with interviewing and recommending new staff. This position will be responsible for ensuring equipment is maintained and serviced as required. The position must routinely determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish standard and non-standard work assignments. Must be able to maintain close team environment or work independently.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as maintenance equipment operation.
  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employees and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used.
  • Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations.
  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
  • Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew.


Additional Expectations:


This position is subject to emergency call back and will be required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations during adverse weather. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Position may require heavy lifting.  Safety toe footwear required.   

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and (6) six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
