The Center spans multiple University departments, schools and campuses including the Medical School Program in Health Disparities Research and the School of Public Health Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity, the Mayo Clinics, and Hennepin Healthcare. This role is integral in developing and implementing communication strategies to effectively convey our missions, initiatives, and achievements to diverse audiences and communities. This position reports directly to the C2DREAM Program Manager.
This position is based out of Minneapolis, MN and is eligible for hybrid work from home and/or on campus work dependent upon individual performance and organization need, though some regular work will be expected, requiring 1 to 2 days in office days per week, with Tuesdays as our current in office day. Because the University is a land-grant institution that serves the state, residing in Minnesota is typically required.
Position Responsibilities:
Communication Strategy:
Work with leadership to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive communication strategies to effectively meet the programs' missions and goals.
Content Creation:
Produce high-quality written content, including press releases, articles, blog posts, social media updates, and newsletters, highlighting the achievements and impact of program initiatives.
Translate complex research findings into accessible and engaging content for diverse audiences, including researchers, policymakers, community partners, and the general public.
Event Communication Support:
Assist in planning and executing communication strategies for institutional events, such as the annual conference and seminar series, to ensure effective promotion and participation.
Create promotional materials, manage event-related communications, and coordinate with internal and external partners to maximize visibility and engagement.
Digital Media Management:
Manage the program's digital platforms (website, social media channels, etc.) to ensure timely and engaging dissemination of programs and grant-related content.
Monitor and analyze digital analytics to evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and make data-driven recommendations for improvement.
Media Relations:
Cultivate and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and relevant stakeholders to secure media coverage for programs and research initiatives.
Serve as a spokesperson for the institution on matters related to PHDR and C2DREAM, as needed.
Collaboration and Coordination:
Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including leadership, researchers, administrators, staff, and community partners, to ensure alignment of messaging and communication efforts.
Coordinate with external partners, community organizations, policymakers, and funding agencies to amplify the impact of initiatives and foster collaborative relationships.
Anticipated annual salary range is low to mid $70k depending upon qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, English, public relations, or journalism, plus at least four (4) full-time years of relevant experience.
Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives and tailor messaging for diverse audiences.
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and across teams.
Proficiency in digital media management, including content creation, social media engagement, and website administration.

Preferred Qualifications:
Proven experience in establishing successful partnerships with community organizations and media outlets.
Previous involvement with equity-focused programming is advantageous.

Experience with Salesforce, Drupal, and Squarespace is preferred.
Prior experience working with research grants is beneficial.

About the Department

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota was created more than 50 years ago in response to a legislative mandate to train primary care physicians. Since then, we have been leaders in transforming the specialty through education, research, and patient care. We are the academic sponsor of seven family medicine residencies-five in the Twin Cities, two in Greater Minnesota. We are involved in medical student education activities across the Medical School's two campuses: Twin Cities and Duluth. We sponsor five fellowship programs-sports medicine, hospice and palliative medicine, behavioral medicine, clinical informatics, and human sexuality- and offer continuing medical education opportunities. We are regularly among the top National Institutes of Health-funded family medicine departments. Our faculty are actively researching health disparities, healthcare delivery, and population health.
