The Art Department invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Ceramics to begin in Fall 2025. We seek candidates proficient in a broad range of Ceramics Arts processes and techniques who are prepared to teach ceramics principles, expand current conceptions of ceramics, and challenge conventional art curricula and pedagogies. The successful candidate will contribute to the vision of the school by bringing a perspective, way of thinking and creating, and a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and material approaches in the field of ceramics.
Ceramics is a core area in the Art Department serving students who major in Art and students throughout the College community. The Ceramics Area offers graduate and undergraduate courses utilizing the ceramics facilities which includes electric kilns (Bailey Oval Bell Kiln, new Skutt Kilns, and a Bailey small kiln), Shimpo RK2 wheels, clay mixers (Blue Bird & Blue Bird Pugger Table Top), a Brent slab roller, and one extruder.
The Ceramics Area also seeks to prepare students to think conceptually about art-making and encourages expanded modes of making that could include but are not limited to interdisciplinarity, lived experience, current social movements and contemporary culture.
Core Ceramics faculty responsibilities include:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate studio art and seminar classes at all levels; mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
- Serve as the Ceramics Area Head: create ceramics curriculum and scheduling, train adjunct faculty; manage student workers and/or work study, coordinate supplies budgets; maintain Ceramics facility and equipment.
- Serve on departmental and university committees; assist in student recruitment; participate in assessment; contribute to active leadership in departmental governance and administration; participation in the rotation of leadership for the Art Department and the Studio Art programs.
- Maintain recognized professional artistic activity and scholarly research; participate in exhibitions and/or presentations of work; engage in field-specific activities.
The Art Department is part of the Division of Humanities & the Arts at City College of New York (CCNY). We have more than 750 undergraduate art majors and minors and we offer Graduate Programs in Studio Art, Digital and Interdisciplinary Art Practice, Art History & Art Museum Studies, and Art Education. CCNY serves a large population of first generation and historically marginalized students. Our current student population has roots in 153 countries; ninety-nine languages are spoken on campus.
