Job Summary

The Director, Affordability of Care (AOC) brings experience in supporting the development and execution of performance improvement programs targeting cost reduction and efficiency improvement. It is a hands-on role that many times involves a healthy balance of player/coach mindset. The position may have a handful of direct reports but will most certainly need to lead within and across all levels of leadership within the company. At times, the incumbent will interact, influence, strategize with various levels external to the company including senior leaders and front-line colleagues. This position will collaborate and work end-to-end across the enterprise to support ways in which the company can operate and execute more effectively and efficiently around the fundamental health plan activity. This role will evaluate opportunities for business process re-engineering, automation, digitizing and reduction in variation, waste and defects in the operating model. The Director, AOC will work with and for the Vice President, Affordability of Care and should be seen as a “change agent” of the company, responsible for spurring a redesign of the operating model across a variety of disciplines. The Director, AOC will prompt and lead managers to re-examine how things are done, challenging their assumptions about what is possible. The successful candidate will be someone with strong technical skills in end-to-end management of projects looking for ways to improve effectiveness and efficiency in complex functional areas. They will have experience in business process re-engineering and helping to create the “ideal design” supporting a managed care organization of size, scale, and complexity. They will have strong communication and collaboration skills yet take a position on topics and support the creation of the most efficient and effective operating model. The right mindset is continuing to push past the convenient compromise, to help people look for paths to success, and to hold fast in an unwavering way to the end goal regardless of the surrounding conditions.
Key Responsibilities/Duties – what you will be doing

Provides program management for specific areas identified by VP, AOC working in conjunction with responsible line leaders and corporate staff
Supports identification and execution of improvement opportunities
Work as part of the performance management workstream sponsors, leads and initiative owners on the successful execution of the program
Supports a successful restructuring and program, ensuring a “clean sheet”, best-in-class approach to all functions
Provides senior leaders with coaching, insights and challenge on the tactics and pathways they need to adopt to meet their ambitious targets
Qualifications – what you need to perform the job

Education, Certification and Licensure

A Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or a similar discipline
An engineering degree is highly advantageous
Masters or MBA degree from business school is highly advantageous
Experience (minimum years required):

Has distinctive experience managing major performance uplift/ turnaround efforts in corporations that are >$1B in revenue
Has led or supported restructuring and turnaround cases both in in both line as well as in interim management roles (CRO, COO, CFO, GM of large (> $1B) Business Unit)
Has conducted Kaizen and/or similar process improvement events with strong expertise in process re-engineering to drive efficiency and measurable process improvement
Experience and expertise driving rapid and successful operational turnarounds across key cost and administrative levers
Experience in identifying metrics which can be used to identify inefficiencies and progress of process improvement
Financial management and line management experience
Has a foundation in operations and/or finance; must be fluent in P&L, and balance sheet structure and terminology, and able to critique business plans / operational plans / capital plans / working capital management
Has worked in a situation and/or a situation with large performance aspirations, and has been able to charge forward, be calm yet strong under fire
Previous experience creating and/or editing process flows and driving outcomes through key performance indicators beyond financial cost goals
Previous experience in supporting progress toward ambitious performance improvement goals, and a track record and passion for delivery large programs

Strong problem-solving ability, proven in a large, high-paced program environment. Personal conviction and energy to sustain program momentum over an extended period
The ability to bridge across multiple, often interdependent, initiatives to manage to net financial outcomes (both savings and investments) and to highlight and manage dependencies
Has an investor / owner’s mindset and approach to business and a willingness to take commercial and mitigated operational risk
Working Conditions and Additional Requirements (include special requirements, e.g., lifting, travel):

Must be able to work under normal office conditions and work from home as required.
Work may require simultaneous use of a telephone/headset and PC/keyboard and sitting for extended durations.
May be required to work additional hours beyond standard work schedule.
Overnight travel may be required on occasion.
Full time availability to put into the role.
