Summary of Responsibilities:

The Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (AASD) is recruiting for a teacher who will serve as the Physical Education Teacher and Recreational Coordinator for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing.

Description of Duties: 

Physical Education Teacher: Under general supervision:

  • Organize lessons and classes that promote age-appropriate physical activity among children and young adults from kindergarten to high school
  • Create and maintain a classroom conducive to learning based on student assessments and data using the best practices of bilingual pedagogy and differentiated instruction
  • Utilize effective classroom management for optimal learning including managing student behavior
  • Develop motor skills and physical development among younger children and proper exercise and eating habits among older children
  • Teach skills that students will need to participate in physical activity outside of the physical education class and skills students will need for a lifetime of physical activity; observe and inform students of corrective measures necessary for skill and improvement
  • Adjust the curricula to adapt to children with different levels of physical and cognitive ability
  • Teach cognitive concepts about motor skills and fitness
  • Explain and enforce safety rules governing sports, recreational activities, and the use of sports and exercise equipment
  • Teach age-appropriate Health units and classes that include sex education and drug awareness and prevention.

Recreational Coordinator: Under general supervision:

  • Coordinate and oversee the school’s afterschool program: tutoring and sports program
  • Create goals and objectives for the program based on the students’ needs
  • Serve as the point of contact for families regarding schedules, pick-ups, and other athletic-related issues
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) , maintains confidentiality when dealing with students, families, and records
  • Document and maintain records that evaluate and inform future planning based on goals and performance objectives and evaluations from stakeholders
  • Recruit and train program staff (e.g., staff tutors, coaches, etc.)
  • Prepare schedules and assignments for tutors/coaches and students
  • Communicate schedules to stakeholders
  • Coordinate facilities and programs with school staff and Athletic Directors from other schools regularly (e.g., cancellations, updates, rosters, student eligibility, etc.)
  • Ensure all safety rules, regulations and procedures are followed
  • Perform public relation duties by communicating event calendar and announcements to stakeholders via the school’s website related to recreational activities
  • Schedule games, referees, and buses
  • Work with the school’s core leadership team and coaches to establish/enforce the student code of conduct for players (including monitoring students’ grades in order to participate in athletic events)
  • Order uniforms and equipment
  • Coordinate the end-of-year athletics banquet

*Note: This position involves flexible schedule, depending on off-season and on-season, working in late afternoons and evenings. Overnight travel is required. Applicants will be expected to exhibit the ability to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) during the interview with an expectation of obtaining an ASL rating of 3+ or above within three years from date of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:

  • Possesses or is eligible to obtain Georgia Teacher Certification in Health and Physical Education
  • Three years of experience teaching deaf/hard of hearing students
  • Experience managing an after-school program or similar program
  • Knowledge of various school level athletic/sporting games, rules, and regulation
  • ASL proficiency at 3+ or above as measured by the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI)
