About the Job
The Venture Development Associate is a full-time person who will lead the coordination and support for key programs that advance the development of UMN startup companies. This will involve organizing and facilitating these programs including the logistics of setting up and managing the meetings, recruiting faculty and community member participation, setting the agenda, and managing spend to budget. These programs are intended to increase the number, strength, and potential of success for UMN startups. It will also involve the identification and development of new programs to support the Venture Center function. This role will work closely with UMN's Business Advisory Group (BAG), Discovery Launchpad (DLP), MIN-Corps and other University stakeholders. It will require a person who has strong organizational, communication and networking skills but also has experience and expertise within the startup environment. This includes at least some knowledge of company governance, company financing, company establishment/setup, and the pitfalls/challenges associated with startups. The desired candidate will not only have been involved in or engaged with a startup at some point in their career but also has experience and desire to work on development programs.
The Venture Center Venture Development Associate will report to the Associate Director of the Venture Center. The anticipated salary for this position is $110k - $130k. Position Duties and Responsibilities Venture Development and Support (55%) Assist with needs of startups in the Venture Center's Pipeline. Work on selected startup pipeline opportunities in coordination with Venture Development Manager, Discovery LaunchPad and other Tech Comm team members. Identify and plan program content for workshops and showcase events, in coordination with Tech Comm's event planning team members, to support the needs of advancing startup pipeline opportunities. Recruit Business Advisory Group (BAG) members and other startup executives to assist with startup opportunities. Facilitate startup specific BAG Deep Dives and other BAG activities focused on the startup pipeline. Promote Entrepreneurship Amongst University Researchers through Development Events and Activities (25%) Identify program content for workshops and showcase events to encourage UMN researcher entrepreneurship. Coordinate this activity with UMN's MIN-Corps program and other University stakeholders. Lead Tech Comm's event planning team members in facilitating event logistics, including recruiting speakers, panel members and other content supporting resources Recruit attendees; faculty, post docs, grad students and any external people including BAG members Shared Venture Center Team Ecosystem Responsibilities (15%) Attend and participate in MN entrepreneurial ecosystem events (this may include evening and weekend events) representing the Venture Center Attend and participate in Tech Comm events (this may include evening and weekend events) representing the Venture Center Continue to drive the recruitment of key talent in the BAG with special focus on diversity equity and inclusion Continue to drive the recruitment of key talent in the Discovery Launchpad with special focus on diversity equity and inclusion Contribute to the improvement of BAG member engagement in the UMN startup ecosystem including the development and implementation of ways to increase the value of this group for the entire Tech Comm organization Startup Company data tracking and information communication (5%) Manage the Salesforce startup records including startup leader contact information Update the on-going startup data and information tracking documents Lead annual collection and reporting of the AUTM UMN startup data Work with the Research & Innovation Office's marketing communications team on startup related efforts
Qualifications
Required Qualifications BA/BS degree plus a minimum of eight years experience Bachelor's, advanced degree in science or engineering or equivalent working experience and strong technical aptitude Experience in leading programs and events Experience working in or with start-up ventures Strong, demonstrated, interpersonal and relationship building skills Strong, demonstrated, written and verbal communication skills Process and detail oriented Strong business skills and experience Preferred Qualifications Master of Business Administration or equivalent understanding from work experience Three years or more working in a startup
