The Division of Hematology Oncology is seeking a Staff Research Associate 1 with experience in a BSL2 laboratory. In this role, you will perform tissue culture work; maintain different cell lines and human cells; perform large-scale selection of different populations of cells; grow and purify viral vectors (transfection, purification, titration) and live virus; maintain log of vectors, virus, and cells. Process blood and tissue samples (mouse, human, primate) and sort for selected populations of cells. HIV infection of cultured cells and human cells. Perform molecular biology: DNA and RNA extraction, molecular cloning, PCR and RT-PCR.
You will be expected to maintain a laboratory notebook in enough detail that results can be reproduced. Plan experiments in conjunction with supervisor; but, also must be able to analyze and interpret data and plan experiments independently. Additionally, you will work closely with other technicians in conducting large-scale experiments; assist in training of undergraduates; order, stock, and maintain inventory on laboratory supplies; and assist with handling of mice. You will perform animal handling and manipulations – various types of injections, retro orbital bleeds, biopsies, euthanizations, and sample harvesting (blood, various tissues). Assist with humanized mouse surgeries and monitor mouse health and cell engraftment for downstream applications.
Hourly Salary Range: $25.75 – $30.71
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in biology or related field. Working knowledge and experience with basic biology.
- Skill in using BSL2 laboratory practices and sterile techniques.
- Skill in preparing media and reagents used in tissue culture work.
- Skill in handling human cells and cell lines (adherent and suspension). Skill in counting cells, freezing/thawing cells, storing cells, passaging cell lines, maintaining primary cells.
- Skill in performing vector transfection, transduction, and titration.
- Skill in flow cytometry staining of samples (cells, blood, tissue).
- Skill in performing DNA/RNA extractions, viral RNA, PCR, RT-PCR.
- Willing to work long hours (planned or unplanned), overtime, or alternate hours (such as weekends, offset hours and late at night) as requested.
- Skill in performing a given protocol in a reproducible way. Skill in reading laboratory protocols and other scientific documents. Skill in troubleshooting and optimizing protocols as necessary, documenting any protocol deviations with thorough explanation of why deviation occurred.
- Ability to work independently to finish tasks in a timely manner. Ability to set priorities and manage time effectively despite unanticipated frequent interruptions/distractions. Ability to adjust to changes in the workload and switch focus as needed. Ability to make sound judgments and decisions. Very organized with meticulous attention to detail. Skill in detailed documentation of activities, tasks, progress, observations, etc.
