The Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University serves more than 500 students studying journalism, broadcast production, public relations, advertising, and film. Position Details

Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
The Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University welcomes applications for the Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice in Sports Media Production. The position begins Fall 2024.

The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of all phases of television and video production, with the ability to teach multi-camera production in both field and studio settings. Class assignments will largely support the growing sports media minor, with 4 courses per semester in Sports Media Production, Multi-Camera Field Production, including remote van operation and video editing, a practicum course offering hands-on experience in live sports recording and production, and Multi-Camera Studio Production. The faculty member may also create and launch new sports media and/or production courses, based on their expertise.

The selected candidate will oversee the department’s National Sports Media Association chapter, assist with department and university production projects, and manage activities in the production studios. As an Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice, the faculty member should expect to participate in departmental and university service and remain active in the field, reflecting such activity in teaching and student engagement. The faculty member is not required to engage in research or creative activity.
Educational Requirements for the Position
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree (other degrees will be considered with commensurate experience)
Experience Required for the Position
Experience in sports media/sports production, including a professional portfolio. Skills and experience in camera operation, live directing, technical directing, audio operation, studio setup, lighting, and video editing

Preferred Qualifications:
MFA or other terminal degree
5 or more years of sports production experience
Teaching experience in higher education
