Definition

Under direction, is responsible for planning, organizing, promoting, conducting, and evaluating therapeutic recreation programs, activities, sporting events, and inclusion services to participants with disabilities and/or special needs; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
 

Plans, organizes, promotes, and evaluates community recreational programs and special events for children, teens, and adults with disabilities;

 

Conducts leisure activities for children and adults including physical activities in sports and fitness, social activities, classes, special events, tournaments, day camps, and field trips; travels to multiple worksites in the course of a day’s work in order to lead and instruct participants in activities;

 

Identifies and determines appropriate and effective modifications and/or accommodations needed for program participants; observes participants and communicates with family members regarding relevant issues and concerns;

 

Consults with families needing assistance to determine appropriate sports, recreation, and leisure opportunities for participants with disabilities; develops and implements interventions and activities to assist participants to develop specific skills;

 

Serves as a liaison to various agencies, community groups, organizations, and school districts; makes presentations to promote inclusion awareness and to ensure that community programs are accessible to persons with disabilities;

 

Participates in the development of goals and objectives for therapeutic recreation programs and activities; makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies and procedures; assists in fundraising efforts and grant preparation;

 

Prepares and maintains records and reports to document programming, operations, activities, and participant information;

 

Provides assistance to program participants in making functional transfers, including transfers from and to wheelchairs, mats, toilet, and pool deck; assists program participants in performing personal care activities of daily living;

 

Coordinates transportation and logistics arrangements to enable individuals with disabilities to participate in activities and events;

 

Attends and participates in professional development meetings, trainings, and seminars;

 

Acts as a lead worker to part-time and seasonal program staff, which includes duties such as making work assignments, training, and communicating program goals; 

 

May serve as on-site field placement supervisor to interns, providing training, development, and mentorship in accordance with National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification standards;

May drive a City vehicle to transport participants and/or equipment to program activities and events.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of valid Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).

 

OR

 

Possession of a bachelor’s degree AND two (2) years of experience providing therapeutic recreation, adapted sports or inclusion services to participants with disabilities and/or special needs.  Substitution(s):  Possession of a master’s degree may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

 

Possession of valid First Aid and CPR certification upon completion of probationary period.

 

Some positions may require the possession of a valid driver’s license.
