NOTE: There is one temporary job vacancy available for a highway maintenance worker for our summer season, working out of our Warren truck station. Our first choice is to hire an applicant with a commercial driver's license, but we will also consider a general laborer.

The season will include dates from approximately May 22 - October 22, 2024 (some flexibility provided with schedule).

Highway Maintenance

Under general supervision, an employee working as a general laborer or transportation generalist in highway maintenance performs daily, routine road surface maintenance activities to keep the roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair according to MnDOT standards.

General Laborers:

  • Assists in activities required for roadside surface and roadside maintenance - mowing, brush removal, weed control, patching

  • Provide traffic control in work zones

Transportation Generalist:

  • Operates and makes minor repairs to heavy equipment

  • Perform all activities required for roadway and roadside maintenance: patching, culvert replacement, guardrail and mailbox repair

  • Performs activities to maintain vegetation and control erosion, includes a variety of landscaping work

  • Provide traffic control in work zones

NOTE: The Transportation Generalist incumbents will be subject to drug and alcohol testing; an individual not currently in the random pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetylmorphine (6-am). The incumbent must also be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Generalist:

A valid Class A or B Driver's License and no air brake restriction is required at time of application. May require a tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire, per project needs. PLEASE INDICATE ON YOUR APPLICATION THAT YOU HOLD A CDL LICENSE.

Exam Part 1: The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with:

Experience Roadside Maintenance:

  • One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, snowplowing or farm experience).

OR

  • Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience.

AND

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Laborer General Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance and construction work sufficient to carry out detailed work directions.

  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor work sufficient to complete assignments.

  • Strength and agility necessary to bend, lift, dig, reach, and load heavy materials.

  • Endurance necessary to perform indoor and outdoor tasks under extreme environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, and wind.

  • Class D Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist

Physical Requirements

A pre-placement physical examination is required for these positions. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into specific job classifications will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both hot and cold) on an intermittent basis. The employee will drive a motor vehicle on the roadway and roadsides. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven sloping ground. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting). The employee will operate machinery and equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee may need to move between 75 to 100 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
