SCHEDULE
Regular Full-Time Position
Multiple Shifts Available: Day, Evening, Night
Must be available Sunday to Saturday with rotating weekends.
Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.
HIRING RANGE
Medical Technologist: $30.00 to $41.68 hourly (MT II starts at $34.00)
Medical Lab Technician: $26.00 to $37.09 hourly (MLT II starts at $30.00)
Actual pay commensurate with experience

JOB SUMMARY
1. Independently performs qualitative and quantitative tests in assigned section(s), following established guidelines and predetermined criteria.
- a. Performs tests and calculations, documents and reports results.
- b. Follows established QA/QC policies and procedures.
- c. Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment.
- d. Maintains procedures, records and logs.
2. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results and uses knowledge, deductive skills and judgment to troubleshoot and resolve them.
3. Specialist: Performs duties and responsibilities only in specialized area for which individual is licensed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs tests and calculations, documents and reports results following prescribed instructions and predetermined criteria.
2. Adheres to established QA/QC policies and procedures.
- a. Documents all QA/QC activities.
- b. Implements corrective action(s) when indicated.
- c. Performs proficiency testing.
- d. Evaluates QA/QC data and proficiency testing reports, recognizes problems, and discusses resolution with supervisor.
- e. May perform QC reviews and follow-up steps, as assigned.
3. Recognizes abnormal or unusual pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical problems.
- a. Uses established corrective action policies and judgment to take appropriate follow-up actions.
- b. Notifies senior or supervisor as appropriate.
- c. Documents all corrective actions.
4. Independently operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment, following written criteria.
5. Maintains clean and organized work area.
6. Operates and maintains equipment, such as but not limited to, pagers, computer hardware, printers, telephones, and answering machines.
7. May instruct new employees and students in the performance of routine procedures, following established criteria.
8. Maintains procedures, records, and logs following established procedures.
9. May assist in the revision of procedures.
10. Keeps abreast of medical laboratory changes, new procedures and technology developments.
11. Maintains appropriate levels of supplies and reagents and places orders as needed.
12. May prepare specimens and supplies for transport and/or shipping according to DLS procedures and policies, as required. Follows IATA shipping regulations as required.
13. Performs the following tasks as assigned:
- a. Phlebotomy
- b. Other specimen collection
- c. Accessioning (data entry)
- d. Processing of specimens
- e. Forensic Toxicology: specimen collections, Breath Alcohol Testing
- f. Clerical activities
14. Kona Community Hospital
- a. Provides morgue services 24/hours, 7 days/week, 365 days/year -follows all morgue procedures to meet regulatory requirements for the handling of bodies related to morgue duties. Follows operational guidelines to perform morgue duties.
- b. Removes all deceased from facility morgue and meets mortuary representative when mortuary arrives to collect the deceased. Prepares all documentation related to morgue duties. Follows the morgue documentation processes and logging systems for all deceased; stores logs and documentation and ensures information is kept safe and confidential.
- c. Performs handling, removal, and storage of deceased HHSC patients from the Emergency Department or facility patient floors or deceased delivered by EMS from non-HHSC locations, in morgue refrigerators/refrigerated locker(s). Shall shroud, tag and log the deceased in accordance with regulatory requirements.
15. MT III: Acts as a resource person (specialty expert).
16. Identifies and analyzes problems; makes decisions and takes appropriate action(s).
17. Assists internal and external customers with questions, concerns, problems, etc.
18. Communicates relevant information to team members, supervisor, and other appropriate people in a timely and appropriate manner.
19. Supports organizational performance and strategy by providing information and contributing to quality improvements, as appropriate.
20. Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with DLS safety policies and procedures. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries to supervisor promptly.
21. Maintains positive work climate and effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
22. Maintains attendance as scheduled/assigned, consistent with DLS policies and procedures.
23. Attends and/or participates in activities such as, but not limited to, meetings, required in-service programs, continuing education, and competency assessments.

JOB DEMANDS
Communication Demands:
- Able to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations, as appropriate.
- Able to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
- Able to effectively communicate information to internal and external customers in informal settings such as one-on-one and small group situations.
Typical Physical Demands:
- Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires clear vision at twenty (20) inches or less and able to identify and distinguish colors.
- Requires corrected hearing to normal range.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, lab coats, gloves, face shields.
- Able to stand and walk up to four (4) hours per day continuously.
- Able to sit up to two (2) hours per day continuously.
- Able to use PC up to two (2) hours per day continuously.
- Able to perform repetitive manual motion such as, but not limited to, pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens.
- Able to bend, lift and carry supplies or equipment weighing up to thirty five (35) pounds.
Typical Working Conditions:
- Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.
- Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Medical Technologist/Specialist - Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited college or university, OR
- Medical Laboratory Technician - High school diploma or equivalent. Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited college or university and completion of a clinical laboratory internship preferred.
Experience:
- Medical Technologist I: less than two (2) years experience as an MT
- Specialist (Categorical): less than two (2) years experience as a Specialist (Categorical)
- Medical Laboratory Technician I: less than two (2) years' experience as an MLT.
- Medical Laboratory Technician II:
- Two (2) or more years of experience as an MLT with one (1) year at DLS with at least a Consistently Meets rating on last Performance Appraisal and no Corrective Action (Verbal or above) within prior year; OR
- Three (3) years relevant experience as MLT.
Certification:
Hawaii:
- Certified or licensed as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.
- Exception: Individuals licensed as a technologist, specialist, technician by the State of Hawaii prior to the effective date of Hawaii Administration Rule 11-110 (Oct 19, 2002).
Guam:
- Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification preferred.
Saipan:
- Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by 42 CFR 493 (CLIA) preferred.
Licensure:
- Hawaii: State license as a Technologist, Specialist or Technician, as applicable.
- Positions performing bench coverage in the Blood Bank department must possess a current Hawaii State license as a Medical Technologist, unless otherwise approved by the Laboratory Director.
Skills:
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.
- Excellent customer service skills
Other Qualifications:
- If required to drive a company vehicle, a valid driver's license and current acceptable traffic abstract is required.
