Job Description

The Iowa Department of Revenue’s Compliance Division is currently seeking a Revenue Examiner 2 to join the Corporate Income team. 

The Compliance Division oversees all facets of tax processing, issuances of business permits, and alcohol regulation throughout the state. From the receipt of individual and business tax returns and payments, audits and collections, to routine compliance inspections and regulatory verification of alcohol-licensed establishments, this division is tasked with upholding, enforcing and educating taxpayers and licensees on Iowa’s laws and regulations.

In this position you will be responsible for:

  • Examines tax returns and related documents to determine the completeness, accuracy, and compliance with specific tax laws and regulations.
  • Corresponds with taxpayers and field staff to address discrepancies or incomplete items, responds to questions and explains applicable rules and regulations
  • Computes tax, interest, and penalties on current and delinquent accounts.
  • Issues billing request notices, refund requests, liens, and releases from tax liability obligations.
  • Identifies individuals who are delinquent on submitting tax returns and payments.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following:

  • Demonstrated ability to examine tax returns and make decisions based on specific tax laws and regulations
  • Mid-level knowledge of laws, legal codes, government regulations, agency rules and the ability to research and apply findings to a tax situation
  • Experience in negotiation techniques and listening skills

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalency and four years of clerical accounting experience which involved the compilation, tabulation, examination, verification or recording of financial, statistical or related fiscal programs using elementary bookkeeping principles and practices;

OR

the successful completion of a post-high school vocational/technical, business college, or area community college curriculum in accounting which included concentrated course work equivalent to twenty semester hours (or more) in accounting;
OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of employment in clerical office work for each year of the required education;
OR

substituting the successful completion of thirty semester hours or the academic equivalent in a post high school Business, Accounting or closely related curriculum for each year of the required experience;
OR

any equivalent combination of qualifying education or experience;
OR

one year of experience as an Accounting Technician 1 in the State of Iowa classified service will be considered as qualifying;
OR

one year of work experience as an Accounting Clerk 3 in the State of Iowa classified service will be considered as qualifying.
