GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 


The Conservation and Education Public Relations Specialist (R3 Specialist) will further R3 outreach and education efforts across the State of Wyoming. The position will help to support mentored hunting and fishing programs on the ground and through data collection and analysis. This position will assist in planning and executing the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program and other summer camps at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp in Dubois, Wyoming. The position will support outreach events, providing the public with information about wildlife, fisheries, habitat management, ecology, hunting, fishing, and other outdoor skills. This 12-month contract position begins tentatively on May 23rd.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:   The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.


  • Assist with the planning and execution of two Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop and one fly fishing Beyond Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop. 
  • Support further development of the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program.
  • Assist with the development of hunter and angler recruitment activities at the University of Wyoming and community colleges.
  • Assist in the development of lesson plans & activities for events, including the recruitment, retention, and reactivation of hunters and anglers.
  • Assist with camps, including Family Fishing Camp and Wyoming Collegiate Conservation Symposium.
  • Support Wyoming’s mentored hunting and fishing program, WY Hunt Fish.
  • Routine clean-up and setup of program areas; maintenance and organization of education equipment/materials.
  • Assist with the setup and execution of National Archery in the Schools Program Training.
  • Maintain National Archery in the School Program Basic Archery Instructor certification and Wilderness First Responder certification.
  • Assist with instruction at mentored hunting experiences, field days, hunter education courses, and other outdoor education programs.
  • Assist participants with application and registration processes.

Qualifications



PREFERENCES: 


Preference will be given to those with a bachelor's degree in education, human dimensions of natural resources, outdoor recreation, tourism management, natural resources, or related field.
Preference will be given to those with experience teaching fishing, archery, firearm safety, hunting, and wildlife conservation.
Preference will be given to those with experience safely supervising participants in an outdoor education environment.
Preference will be given to those with a wilderness first responder certification, National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) basic archery instructor certification, or Wyoming Hunter Education instructor certification.

**Must have a valid driver’s license.


KNOWLEDGE: 


  • Must be able to work well independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation in Wyoming or the Mountain West.
  • Must be able to work well with others on a team and serve as a peer leader.
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions, and be comfortable pulling trailers and operating 4WD vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain composure and delegate during continuously changing work conditions. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with external partners and stakeholders. 
  • Must have excellent communication skills, strong organizational and leadership skills, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a passion for working with adult education.
  • Must be able to responsibly supervise groups of up to 30 participants while involved with fishing, archery, and air rifle activities.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Requires a flexible schedule, including travel and long days, working evenings and weekends.
  • The position requires statewide travel, including up to 10 weeks throughout the year.
  • The position requires Wilderness First Responder certification & background checks (provided by WGFD).


NOTES:


  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment. 
  • Uniforms will be provided when in the field.
  • Department housing is not provided except while traveling or at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp. 
  • This position requires weekend work and travel.
