Job Summary General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.
We are currently hiring a Senior Antenna Design Engineer who will be a key member within the GA-EMS Radar Technologies group. In this capacity, the Senior Antenna Design Engineer will lead antenna designs and trade studies in support of new air and ground-based designs. The Senior Antenna Design Engineer will report to the Manager of Hardware Engineering within the Radar Technologies group.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Design and develop antennas to be used individually or as part of a larger phased array aperture including, but not limited to, patch and horn antennas, Vivaldis, slot antennas, and spiral antennas
- Use industry-standard simulation tools (HFSS, CST, FEKO, NEC) to model, analyze, and optimize antenna designs
- Perform design trade studies including, but not limited to, antenna type, polarization, gain, beamwidth, cost, and ease of manufacturing to determine the best solution for the intended application
- Perform antenna-level evaluation efforts to characterize parameters such as gain, directivity, beamwidth, mutual coupling, and return loss
- Collaborate with the Hardware, Software, and Systems engineering teams to ensure a seamless integration of antennas into the overall system
- Represent the company at technical reviews, meetings and formal design reviews
- Stay current with antenna industry innovations, developments and trends

Job Qualifications:
- Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; twelve or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, ten or more years of experience with a masters degree, or seven or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education
- Demonstrates a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership
- Experience designing multiple antenna types including, but not limited to, patch and horn antennas, Vivaldis, slot antennas, conformal and spiral antennas
- Proficient in the design of antenna elements for use in phased array antenna systems
- Proven experience designing, simulating, and optimizing antennas and antenna arrays using electromagnetic simulation tools such as CST, HFSS, and/or FEKO
- Proficient in antenna measurement techniques and skilled in operating standard lab equipment including network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and other essential tools for precise antenna testing and analysis
- Ability to work with and manage subcontractors, as needed
- Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout a fast-paced, R&D environment
- Must have strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals
- Must be customer focused and able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance required
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated experience designing antennas for radars and/or Electronic Warfare systems
- Experience simulating and designing RF circuits, subsystems, and assemblies using tools such as MATLAB, ADS, HFSS, and/or CST
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements (FCC, etc.)
- Previous experience working with the Department of Defense
- Active security clearance
