About the Job



The TRIO Upward Bound Vision Quest program (UBVQ) serves 135 students in grades 9-12 at Edison, Roosevelt, South, and Wellstone International High Schools in Minneapolis, and Denfeld High School in Duluth. Our program participants are motivated to successfully complete high school and attend college following their high school graduation. The annual Upward Bound Vision Quest Summer Program is a 6-week college-going experience with unique hands-on learning that helps bridge the learning gap from one school year to the next. Students receive instruction in English, math, science, foreign language for core courses and a diverse array of elective courses to help teach life skills and leadership skills. Our 2024 Summer Program will run from June 24 - August 2, 2024 on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus, with the last week being an out-of-state trip.

Summer High School Teacher positions are non-residential limited time/temporary positions. High School Teachers are to teach core academic courses or elective courses, Tuesday thru Thursday, in a block schedule of 2 hours a day either in Session 1 or Session 2 of the Summer Program. Each session is 2 weeks long, totaling to 12 hours of instruction. High School Teachers will be teaching on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Candidates must be able to commit to teaching a full session (either Session 1 or Session 2) and are required to attend a 4-hour staff training during the week of June 10, 2024. A maximum of two courses per session can be taught during the summer program for each staff member.

Core Courses:
Math (instruction through to Pre-Calculus)
Science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics - instruction must have a lab component)
English (instruction must include a composition and literature component)
Foreign Language (preferably Spanish, Korean, American Sign Language)
Elective Courses:
We are open to ideas for classes in any subject area but will give preference to courses focusing on life skills or leadership skills
Example elective courses: College Cooking 101, Beginner's Sewing, Leadership Seminar, Budgeting and Financial Literacy
Teaching Schedule:
Session 1
Week 1: June 24 - June 28, 2024 and
Week 3: July 8 - July 12, 2024
2 hours per day - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
9:15 am - 11:15 am - Core Course (Math)
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm - Core Course (Foreign Language)
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm - Elective Course(s)
Total of 12 hours of instruction
Session 2
Week 4: July 15 - July 19, 2024 and
Week 5: July 22 - July 26, 2024
2 hours - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
9:15 am - 11:15 am - Core Course (Science)
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm - Core Course (English)
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm - Elective Course(s)
Total of 12 hours of instruction
Job Responsibilities: Coordination 100%
Plan, implement, and lead curriculum in subjects listed above for core classes and/or elective classes
Prepare lesson plans and teach Tuesday thru Thursday in a classroom at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities during summer program dates for Session 1 or Session 2, or both
Assess student learning and inform UBVQ staff of student academic concerns and areas for improvement
Attend all staff trainings
Attend and engage in weekly staff check-in meetings
Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications



Minimum Qualifications:
Experience teaching or working with a diverse group of students, including those who are first-generation and low-income
Experience in creating and implementing a course curriculum that is both rigorous and enjoyable for students who operate at a broad range of ability levels
Experience in effective classroom or learning workshop management strategies
Preferred Qualifications:
Core Courses: Degree in Teaching/Education, Minnesota Secondary teaching license, and/or equivalent life experience
Elective Courses: Teacher in training and/or equivalent expertise/experience
Past experience working with and/or participating in a program that serves underprivileged youth
Experience working with the Duluth or Minneapolis Public Schools
Experience working with TRIO programs
Ability to connect with and motivate high school students
Ability to work independently without supervision
