Practice Details:
Helps support 22 Pathologists and 5 additional PAs with
45,000 to 50,000 specimens annually
~100 autopsies annually
Rotates through three sites operated by the University of Minnesota Medical Center
Position is for a day shift with weekend and holiday call (equitably shared between the PA group on a rotation schedule)

Required Qualifications:
Completion of NACCLS accredited Pathologist's Assistant Training Program or equivalent medical technology education and training.
Must be ASCP certified as a Pathologists' Assistant or eligible to certify or MD or MD equivalent with at least 2 years pathology experience.
Experience in grossing specimens and assisting with or performing autopsies.
Ability to effectively demonstrate skills and train medical students, medical residents and related personnel.
Good written and spoken communication skills.
Good technical skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
BS in Biochemical Sciences and completion of a (NAACLS) National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences accredited Pathologists' Assistant training program.
2-5 years of experience in grossing specimens and assisting with or performing autopsies.
Job Duties:
1. Performs Surgical Pathology Analysis
Prepares, dissects and dictates a wide variety of hospital based surgical pathology specimens (biopsies to complex, multi-organ resections)
Performs anatomic gross analysis of surgical specimens
Gross specimens under the supervision of staff pathologists
Photographs specimens
Works in conjunction with the OR staff, surgical pathology and histology lab to ensure samples are received and accurately processed in a timely manner.
2. Teaches Surgical Pathology Techniques
Provides technical training to rotating residents, PA students and medical students
Prepares and presents related educational programs to medical and technical staff.
Instructs rotating Pathology Residents, PA students and Medical Students in evisceration and dissection techniques, and in the preparation of the autopsy protocol.
3. Assists in Performing Autopsies
Performs autopsies under the supervision of the staff Pathologist, which includes summarizing the body's clinical history
Prosects organ blocks with evisceration
Dissects organ block and obtains sections for histological examination and photography
4. Assists Pathologist and Residents with Autopsy Reports
Assists in the final preparation of the autopsy report as directed.
Assists in preparing the provisional anatomic diagnosis
Assists in clinical history and autopsy protocol
5. Prepares Tissue Specimens for special studies, teaching and/or research.
Obtain specific tissue specimens
6. Performs adequacy assessment on medical kidney biopsies
Through the aid of a dissecting microscope assess the location of a kidney biopsy
Communicate adequacy of the biopsy to the clinical team
Appropriately separate kidney cores for additional studies
7. Assists in developing or updating new policies and procedures
Assists with other administrative duties as directed by the Pathologist Assistant Supervisor .
8. Involvement in special studies, teaching and/or research
Attends national conferences
Must publish a paper, present a poster or give a lecture to attend the Fall American Association of Pathologists' Assistant (AAPA) conference
9. Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level of population served. (as applicable)

10. Performs other duties including Performance Goals developed by manager and employee and reported in the employee's Performance Review as part of UMPhysicians' Performance Management tools
