About the Job



Position Overview
The Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI) is seeking a Communications and Marketing Manager. CAREI is a research center within the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. The professional in this position will create and execute strategic communications plans using creative thinking, data analysis, strong writing skills, and a knowledge of best practices for traditional and digital media and related platforms, with a fundamental goal of increasing the CAREI's brand strength.

The Communications and Marketing Manager will produce and disseminate a range of customized marketing and communications materials to meet strategic recruitment and visibility goals. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience and expertise in marketing and branding, website and social media management, internal communications, media relations, and organizational planning. This position reports to the Center Director and is responsible for communications to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. This role requires an individual with a collaborative mindset, commitment to inclusion, and excellent interpersonal skills.

Job Responsibilities
Strategic Planning and Project Management (40%)
Collaborate with center leaders to define opportunities and identify emerging opportunities to support growth of CAREI and its marketing objectives.
Create marketing and communications strategic plans that raise the center's visibility and drive product and external sales.
Explore and identify marketing opportunities across and beyond Minnesota for literacy tools, professional development trainings, and other CAREI products.
Partner with CEHD and UMN to support college and University marketing and communications objectives.
Collaborate with University Relations to coordinate media outreach and external channels to promote CAREI's work.
Oversee and lead web-based communication for CAREI's programs in collaboration with program leads to ensure information is accurate and comprehensive; work with the college web team and communications office as needed to deliver the content.
Manage center events designed to support marketing, enhance community engagement, and increase CAREI's visibility.
Collaborate with the center director to track progress toward CAREI annual goals.
Communications Operations (30%)
Manage the development, publishing, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral, including brochures, flyers, guides, signage, promotional items, e-newsletters, website material, videos, social media, and digital monitors.
Send mass communications using the designated software.
Monitor brand usage within the center.
Maintain the CAREI website and intranet site, collaborating with CEHD web staff as needed, to ensure usability and functionality.
Provide consultation to CAREI staff as to when printed materials are necessary and strategic.
Collaborate with CEHD central communications office and CEHD departmental colleagues to develop and adhere to shared standards for communication and marketing strategic plans.
Coordinate with CEHD graphic designer, photographer/videographer, and other media producers as needed for visual asset development.
Writing and Communications (20%)
Develop key messages for CAREI and its programs in collaboration with center leaders.
Research, write, and share CAREI stories across websites, mass emails, social platforms, printed materials, and events to raise visibility and promote products and external sales offerings.
Write original content and curate/edit existing text from other sources, including CAREI staff to meet strategic communication goals.
Ensure that all content is accurate, consistent, and adheres to accessibility principles and University brand standards.
Social Media and Content Development (10%)
Create and develop content for CAREI social media channels that aligns with UMN guidelines and presents the center in a positive and proactive light.
Collaborate with CEHD and UMN University Relations on initiatives as time and resources allow.
As needed, discern opportunities on new and emerging social media platforms to grow the center's reach and engagement.
Develop metrics to measure social media and website analytics to make strategic data-driven decisions about content.

Qualifications



Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field, with six years of professional experience
Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities
Experience developing and executing a branding strategy for an academic department, non-profit agency, or agency providing professional development opportunities
Experience leading and evaluating a successful marketing campaign
Preferred Qualifications
Previous work in web content management systems such as Drupal, Wordpress or others
Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Photoshop and InDesign
Strong verbal and written communication skills for a variety of audiences
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Proven ability to manage multiple and simultaneous projects and activities, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
Experience conducting a market analysis in the education or non-profit industry
Strong interpersonal skills enabling one to work both independently and collaboratively and to build consensus with diverse groups of people
Proven ability to view problems through various lenses and implement change that fits multiple communications needs simultaneously
Demonstrated understanding of content strategy and website design and production
Ability to function as a self-starter and work without close supervision
