Job Description
Assume leadership and supervision for small groups of high school students participating in a non-residential, pre-college, summer program. Provides near-peer mentoring, individual and group academic, career and personal advisement to program participants. Mentors will escort students on campus atall times including classes, labs, meals, on and off campus field trips/activities; lead recreational activities and workshops; chaperon college tours. Duties will include but are not limited to: Attending classes with students and assisting instructors with classroom projects, instruction, and laboratory safety, assist students with homework assignments/special projects, supervising bus transportation to and from Stark State College, leading activities, and have the ability to enforce program policies, procedures, chaperoning college tours and monitor USDA regulations during meal times. Mentors are expected to share the responsibility for participant's academic growth, development, and physical well-being. Also required: Attend pre-employment mentor training, all-staff orientation, daily mentor team meetings, weekly staff meetings, and attendance and participation at all program activities and events. One mentor will be compensated for the additional responsibility of serving as the daily bus monitor for Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS). Other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements:
High School graduate; Currently attending an accredited college or university with a
minimum of two semesters completed or a recent graduate of an accredited college or
university. Must have a minimum, cumulative grade-point average of 2.5.
Experience/Qualifications Requirements:
Desire to work with a diverse group of first-generation, college-bound students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Must be a team-leader, yet possess the
ability to work well within a team. High level of maturity, motivation, and responsibility is
required. Ability to develop positive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
Must be able to maintain a friendly, supportive, and professional representation of the
pre-college programs with parents, families, and the public. Must be able to serve as a
positive, near-peer role model for students. Must be able to effectively lead and mentor students, enforce program policies and assume responsibility for the well-being of minors. Position requires a high level of student engagement and 'going above and beyond' for students.Will be required to complete FBI/BCI background clearance process.
Licensure or Certification Requirements:
Valid Ohio Driver License required. First Aid/CPR and lifeguard certification strongly preferred but not required.
Preferred Qualification:
Candidates who have overcome similar barriers and challenges as program participants
(preference will be given to candidates with laboratory science experience and a
background or degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, or Health field); completion of at least two semesters of post-secondary education; ability to mentor diverse students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds; and experience mentoring and providing academic support that is culturally relevant to African-American male students.
