The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH is looking for a versatile, creative, and responsible Senior Developer to join the Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM). We are looking for candidates who have extensive experience in user-focused full stack application development with an emphasis on backend development skills. The Senior Full Stack Developer will have opportunities to travel to academic conferences and community hackathons to collaboratively design and build software with other software developers on the global stage. Responsibilities





Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Collaborate with developers, business analysts, project managers, and other stakeholders to understand problems to solve, identify potential solutions, evaluate the state of relevant research and market, and assess financial/operational/other constraints.
Understands existing enterprise systems and applications to avoid unnecessary work as well as develop solutions that leverage existing functionalities, infrastructure, and data flow, such as the IGM cloud compute environment, Epic Integration, LIMS integration, etc.
Architect custom software and creative media solutions that are security/privacy/legal compliant in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.
Maximize solution reusability, extensibility, and portability by using device/OS agnostic approaches, following best practices, and ensuring interoperability with NCH systems whenever applicable.
Diagrams system characterization, data flow, major components, interfaces, and other key information in detail
Facilitate developers in selecting appropriate development tools, cloud service modules, interface solutions, and other components needed for a solution.
Mentor junior developers by providing additional training/help, pair programming, and helping with debugging, trouble shooting, and testing etc.
Helps team/project overcome technical challenges.
Develops best practice guides for the full custom solution development life cycle.
Keeps up with current technology offerings and advancement trends, as well as keeping team members and leadership informed.
Assists leadership in development of strategic plan and its execution, making purchases, or engaging 3rd party services.
Augments development and testing capacity and provides end-users with technical support.
Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications





Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
Demonstrable experience working with Python and REST APIs.
Experience designing, building and maintaining relational databases and web applications, both individually and as part of a team.
Experience working with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g. React.js), JavaScript ES6, HTML, and CSS.
Demonstrable experience with best practices for version control, code review, testing, and documentation.
Comfortable working in flexible development processes.
Self-motivated, detail oriented, exceptionally analytical problem solver and critical thinker.
Must be an intelligent, quick learner who likes to be confronted with new knowledge and areas to grow.
Effective verbal and written communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.



Nice to Have Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



Experience in building and deploying applications in AWS. Relevant professional certification is a plus.
Experience with MySQL database design and development.
Familiarity with TypeScript.
Familiarity with UI / UX design and web application development.
Experience in a Linux/Unix environment.
Hands on experience with containerization.
Experience in bioinformatics (on the job training will be provided if no previous experience).

Minimum Physical Requirements:

Typing on a keyboard - Frequently (34-66%) Talking on phone/in person Occasionally (0-33%) Able to lift up to 50 lbs. - Occasionally (0-33%) Standing/walking - Occasionally (0-33%) Pressure in this position will vary depending on the workload.
The workload will be heavy but manageable most of the time. Pressure may arise in the face of deadlines associated with grants, required documentation related to the physician's OSU faculty appointment, etc.
