About the Job



Job Summary
Join the Management team overseeing the PCRC managed animal facilities. This position is responsible for the daily overall supervision of PCRC managed animal facilities personnel and the associated animal facilities. This includes general supervision of full time staff and part-time students. Additional duties include animal husbandry and facility maintenance ensuring animal welfare and regulatory compliance are maintained at the highest level.
Responsibilities:
Staff Oversight (30%)
* Provide general supervision of full time employees in the assigned facilities and part-time student employee(s). Assign responsibilities, schedule hours (covering 365 days a year), and provide guidance/counseling/disciplinary action as necessary in consultation with management and HR.
* Participate in interviewing and recruiting new personnel for animal facility. Complete performance evaluations for full time employee(s) on an ongoing basis during the year for employee development.
* Provide general orientation and training of visitors, volunteers, and dedicated employees.
Facility Oversight (30%)
* Ensure animal husbandry and facility records are complete along with submission of census tracking paperwork.
* Develop and monitor Standard Operating Procedures for animal husbandry.
* Maintain inventory of caging.
* Manages the use of storage areas and maintains an equipment inventory, including processing, packaging and storage of supplies, materials and equipment. Accounts for all materials and supplies in the storage facilities and audits goods received.
* Assure animals are properly identified in the facility.
* Attend meetings to learn of new developments in laboratory animal care and designs of new equipment and animal housing facilities.
* Obtain/maintain any hazardous materials certification and mandatory training.
* Coordinate movement of supplies around campus for facilities and coordinate movement of animals as needed.
* Coordinate space and equipment to meet needs of the investigators.
* Assist with performing or scheduling of equipment calibrations, verifications or preventative maintenance.
* Responds to emergency facility situations, triages appropriate steps, communicates with applicable departmental and university personnel.

Regulatory Oversight/Record Keeping (20%)
* Prepare monthly reports that reflect animal census per room.
* Responsible for identifying housing room repairs and prepare for bi-annual inspections by IACUC or other regulatory inspections.
* Maintain the facilities following rules and regulations outlined by the Animal Welfare Act (USDA) and the ILAR "Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" and Animal Care and Use Committee

Animal Care (20%): Cover any duties described in Researcher 1-2 to ensure the care for the animals housed in the PCRC Facilities at UMN including weekend coverage or oversight.

Qualifications



All required qualifications must be included in the application materials
Required:
* Experience BA/BS plus at least 4 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years, or advanced degree plus 2 years of experience
* ALAT Certification
* LATG required to be obtained in two years if not LATG certified on hire
* Three years of direct research animal care experience
* Valid driver's license
* Familiarity with research protocols
* Knowledge of research animal husbandry and diets
* Ability to work with animals exposed to various hazards: chemical, biological, radiation
* Understanding of nonhuman primate colony management
* Word Processing skills
* Professional oral and written communication skills
* Organized work habits
* at least 4 years of experience or advanced degree plus 2 years of experience; or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years
Helpful:
* LATG certification
* Supervisory experience
