Program Summary: The Independent Living Program is a community-based program for clients ages 17 through 20 where our clinicians teach independent living skills. Specifically, participants in this program are at risk for homelessness or have been homeless in the past. Therefore, our goal is to prevent future involvement with the criminal justice or child welfare system by increasing protective factors and decreasing risk.

Intern Position Summary: As the Independent Living (IL) Intern, you will work under the supervision of the Independent Living and Transitional Living Supervisor/Field Supervisor to provide assessments, counseling/psychotherapy, and community support program services for clients, their families, and significant others as needed. Further, you will transition clients in community settings and work to provide supervision, assistance to daily living, case coordination, counseling, guidance, and transportation.

Intern Experience Details: As the IL Intern, you will be responsible for the following responsibilities, including, but not limited to:
 
  • Assist in the participation in the development of the client’s ISP.
  • Contribute to the development and support of individual interventions such as symptom monitoring and self-management as well as assist in increasing social support skills and networks.
  • Provide assistance and support in crisis situations.
  • Provide support, including education and consultation for families and/or significant others regarding the client’s mental illness.
  • Assist in the supervision of a psycho-educational group and assess each client to determine their proficiency in life skills as well as their ability to function in the group.
  • Utilize group work to ensure a safe, growth-producing environment with which clients may address their educational and emotional needs.
  • Assist in the coordination of necessary evaluations and assessments as well as the coordination of all services identified on the client’s ISP.
  • Other services necessary to the enrichment of the internship environment.

Location: This position is based out of our Shaker Heights campus. Services take place in the home and community.

Hours: Field hours are flexible. Occasional evening work should be expected.

Qualifications: This internship is for first or second year Masters’ level students. Therefore, a Bachelor’s Degree and enrollment in a related Master’s program is required. An SWT, CT, LPC, MFT or LSW is required.
