TITLE:Interpretive Tour Lead APPOINTMENT: 67-day Temporary Employee (April thru October) SUPERVISOR:Manager of Interpretation and Visitor Learning CLASSIFICATION:4912 Community Program Assistant OVERVIEW: As part of the Education Department and the public face of the Arboretum, the seasonal Interpretive Tour Lead drives and narrates tram ride tours for ticketed guests, and helps coordinate a team of tram tour guides. In addition, the Tour Lead facilitates free drop-in learning activities for visitors, designed by the Interpretive Program Specialist.For many guests, these activities are their first introduction to the Arboretum. It is important for the Lead Tour Guide to provide an enjoyable, informative experience that conveys the key visitor learning goals of the Arboretum in a way that encourages visitors to explore further after their tour experience. This position is 1-3 days per week, not to exceed 67 days; beginning mid April 2-24 and ending in October 2024. The position requires 1 weekend shift and 1-2 weekday shifts per week in the late morning-early afternoon. JOB DESCRIPTION Give tram tours and coordinate tram team needs Drive and narrate a one-hour tram ride tour for ticketed guests, 1-2 days per week Follow an established tram tour narrative to deliver informative tours about the Arboretum's history, cold climate plants, and the Arboretum's features and programs. Successfully complete Tram Driver training to ensure competency with driving the tram vehicle and narrating tours Maintain a very high level of customer service for all Tram passengers Keep the tram clean and stocked with supplies, and refuel vehicle at beginning of shifts Be the point of contact between the tram drivers and Manager of Interpretation to fill shifts, communicate driver concerns, and restock supplies Report maintenance issue to Arb mechanical shop Discovery Booths Set up and lead free outdoor drop-in learning activities ("Discovery Booths") for arboretum guests, up to 1 weekend shift per week from 9am-2pm Work with volunteers who assist with the Discovery Booths
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Strong interest in horticulture and/or nature education and teaching the public about these topics Ability to safely drive guests in an open-air tram vehicle, not exceeding 15 mph Proven customer service and communication skills Strong willingness to interact with guests of all ages, backgrounds, orientation and socioeconomic status. Demonstrated ability to lead the work of assigned coworkers and volunteers Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills Successful completion of a background check
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Horticulture or nature education training such as the UMN Extension Master Gardener or Master Naturalist volunteer programs, or at least one semester of college-level coursework in horticulture, biology, environmental science, or equivalent Demonstrated ability to work and interact cooperatively in a positive and respectful manner with other employees, members, volunteers and visitors. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is a community outreach unit of the University of Minnesota's College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences. The Arboretum is located west of Minneapolis/St Paul and its 1,200 acres traverse the municipalities of Chaska, Chanhassen and Victoria. As a member of the American Public Garden Association and an accredited museum through the American Alliance of Museums, the Arboretum is a tremendous public asset.
