About the Job



The Humphrey School seeks two Graduate Teaching Assistants to provide assistance in the actual teaching or advising of students in a specified course or courses, under the general supervision of the academic staff, within Humphrey's MPA Cohort. Duties may include grading examinations and reports, supervising and instructing laboratory classes and/or recitation sections, preparing examinations or class materials, and providing basic Canvas support.

The TA's will professionally and sensitively respond to students' academic and leadership performance with concrete, clear feedback. They will confidently explain and assist students in understanding concepts and tools in the Cohort's Analytics curriculum, including:
Thorough understanding of IRB regulations and research protocols
Qualitative research methodology
Quantitative: mathematical concepts and Microsoft Excel tools, e.g., running simple regressions
Teaching Assistants will serve as a member of the cohort instructor team in the development of schedules and curriculum, including a minimum of one planning session each month. They will also:
Grade assignments and provide substantiated feedback to assist students in learning important concepts;
Occasionally prepare and deliver in-class presentations and lead student discussion groups;
Assist with logistical preparation (set-up, take-down) for full-day MPA Cohort meetings;
Perform other duties as assigned.
TA must be present during all 2024-2025 sessions of the MPA Cohort. Employment as a TA for a second semester will be contingent upon successful completion of the first semester.

Qualifications



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be Humphrey students (except where PhD students are required) in good standing and be enrolled for coursework in a graduate or professional degree program full time (6 credits per semester minimum) during the semesters in which they work as a TA.
Applicants must have completed the PAL Cohort courses (or all MPA core courses) and have received a strong grade.
Applicants may not have already received 4 semesters (or 2 academic years) of aid through the Humphrey School, nor have any incompletes on their record as of the start of the appointment.
Nonnative English speaking graduate Teaching Assistants (TAs) must demonstrate proficiency in spoken English appropriate to the demands of their teaching assistantship.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong aptitude for quantitative and qualitative analytics
Ability to engage in deep listening, seeking to understand concerns of students
Demonstrate accessibility and approachability with students
Demonstrate willingness and ability to hold conversations and engage in dialogue on topics including race and gender.
Proven proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other MS Office titles
Experience teaching or advising students, with excellent communications skills
Excellent customer service ethic
Excellent experience with group leadership and conflict management
