Job Title: Seasonal Tax Preparer
Pay Rate: $12.00 and up depending on experience
At Jackson Hewitt, we provide an invaluable service in guiding our clients through the tax codes, rules, and processes.
We do this with integrity, quality, and consistency.
This is something that the vast majority of taxpayers don’t receive from DIY or other assisted providers.
A seasonal tax preparer does income tax preparation for clients during tax season each year.
They must complete a basic tax preparation training course, even if they have some prior experience.
A seasonal tax preparer consults with clients about their year end finances, including employment income, inheritance and investments, charitable donations, whether they have dependents, and other factors that impact taxes.
After gathering all the necessary documents and information a preparer then preparers and submits tax returns on behalf of their clients.
Seasonal tax preparers also need to have good customer service skills and be outgoing.
You will be required to answer the phone, greet clients as they come in, make outgoing calls to clients, schedule appointments etc....
You will also be expected to help with cleaning, filing and other office related tasks.
You will be expected to complete daily checklist and logs.
Tax season is not predictable.
There is no guarantee of how many days or hours you will work.
For Jackson Hewitt, our season begins with holiday loans in December.
You may be asked to work longer than scheduled or may be sent home early depending on demand.
You may be asked to work at any of our three locations.
Due to the short time frame we have for "peak" tax season, high demand and limited staff, it is important that you understand you must show up on time for all scheduled shifts. It is your responsibility to watch for inclement weather and make arrangements to still be at work.
We try our best to maintain a schedule, however a schedule is not a guarantee.
Schedules maybe adjusted daily or weekly.
Job performance and the number of clients coming into file greatly affect the schedule and hours available.
IRS Requirements
You must be at least 18 years of age.
You must have a valid unexpired photo ID.
You must be eligible to work in the United States.
You must be able to pass a background check.
All paid tax return preparers are required to obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).
All PTIN applicants must attest they are compliant with their personal and business tax obligations, or provide an explanation if they are not.
For purposes of obtaining a PTIN, an individual is in tax compliance if
1) all individual and business returns that are due have been filed (or an extension requested) and
2) all taxes that are due have been paid (or acceptable payment arrangements have been established).

PTINs are issued for a specific calendar year. A current year PTIN refers to a PTIN for the current calendar year while next year refers to a PTIN for the upcoming calendar year.
PTIN applications for the upcoming year can be submitted beginning in mid-October each year.
??As part of your training, you are required to take and pass Ethics and Due Diligence training.
A paid tax return preparer must meet four specific due diligence requirements under Treasury Regulation section 1.6695-2 when preparing returns or claims for refund for clients claiming any of these tax benefits:
Earned income tax credit (EITC)
Child tax credit (CTC), additional child tax credit (ACTC), credit for other dependents (ODC)
American opportunity tax credit (AOTC)
Head of household (HOH) filing status
Tax preparers are subject to fines and penalties for not meeting their due diligence requirements.
We provide you with training and basic guidelines on the requirements and that you must complete and document them.
If you fail to meet the requirements, you will be responsible for any fines that you incur.
All paid preparers are subject to IRS rules and regulations. It does not matter how many returns you do or how long you have been doing taxes.
