Taunton State Hospital is seeking a qualified applicant for employment as an Electrician II. The selected candidate will install, maintain, and repair, electrical wiring, fixtures, apparatuses, and control equipment at Taunton State Hospital and perform related work as required.
Please Note: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week on the day shift. The hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Days off are Sunday and Saturday.
*Selected candidate will share on-call rotation duties with other electricians on campus.
Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Plans layout and installs and maintains electrical wiring, fixtures, apparatus and control equipment.
- Repairs various types of electric equipment and apparatus such as motors, generators, regulators, call systems, fire alarm systems, emergency light systems, radios, television antenna systems, air conditioning, refrigeration and heating controls.
- Tests and charges storage batteries.
- Reads electric meters and records meter readings.
- Cleans, lubricates and maintains electrical machinery in all hospital buildings, power plant, main kitchen, carpenter shop, garage and all buildings on campus.
- Works with other support services people on multi-discipline activities.
- Works with outside vendors to maintain electrical equipment.
- Operates emergency generator each month to inspect and test.
- Works with fire marshals to conduct Fire Drills and reset alarms.
- Visually inspects the work of outside contractors to ensure compliance with safety codes and regulations.
- Make an annual safety check on personal and state-owned equipment.
- Kills main electric power during emergencies.
- Checks electrical equipment before putting into service to be sure there is power available to operate the equipment.
- Troubleshoots electrical and related equipment by using necessary equipment and reading schematics, diagrams and outlines to identify and correct operational problems.
- Complete all workorders that are assigned by the supervisor.
- Maintains an adequate inventory of equipment and materials by contacting vendors for pricing.
Preferred Qualifications:
License and/or Certification Requirements:
- Possession of a current and valid Commonwealth of Massachusetts license as a Journeyman or Master Electrician License issued by the State Examiners of Electricians and a Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

About Taunton State Hospital: Taunton State Hospital (TSH) operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is a 62-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient services to adults with major mental illnesses. The hospital is a leader in the successful integration of the Principles of Recovery and a rehabilitation philosophy into the treatment model and a part of the Southeast Area which works closely with the inpatient treatment teams to facilitate patients’ discharge back to the community.
