About the Job



The primary purpose of this position is to design and perform experiments in the area of cancer biology. The position requires the analysis of experimental results with a follow up analysis in consultation with a supervisor or the Pl. Additional lab management duties include the ordering of lab supplies, implementing lab procedures, updating standard operating procedures, and assisting to ensure that the lab is compliant with the rules and regulations of the university. There are also times where the position requires supervision and assistance of new laboratory personnel, including students.

70% - Research: Planning and carrying out experiments using different cancer cell lines, following existing protocols and modifying or updating as needed, performing assays initially under the guidance of a supervisor with a transition to carrying out assays independently, analyzing data from these experiments, communicating with Pl about data/results for publications and grants. Other responsibilities include writing method sections for manuscripts, and assisting with the preparation of manuscript figures, attending lab meetings on weekly basis, and reviewing manuscripts before submission.

15% - Maintaining a laboratory notebook with details of experiments and reagents used, general paperwork and other training requirements, editing existing standard operating protocols as needed, organizing and maintaining lab documents, assisting other laboratory personnel, and supervising new laboratory personnel.

10% - Ordering laboratory supplies and reagents through EFS system or with a purchasing card, working and negotiating with vendors, monitoring lab supplies, and working with adjacent lab personnel for ordering shared lab supplies.

5% - Maintaining general lab area cleanliness, including cleaning of the cell culture room, disposal of bio-hazardous waste, disposal of recyclable materials, maintenance and cleaning of the lab water baths, and defrosting freezers.

Qualifications



Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Biology/Biochemistry/Genetics or similar field and one year of related experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal five years.
This position requires knowledge of operating laboratory and core facility instruments such as thermocyclers, microplate readers (absorbance, fluorescence, and luminescence), Nanodrop spectrophotometer, light microscopes, and bio-safety cabinets, as well as skills in cell culture, and nucleic acid and protein assays, immunofluorescence labeling, and flow cytometry with the intent of analyzing and publishing results. Ability to maintain ultra-low freezers, liquid nitrogen storage tanks, and other laboratory equipment is also required.

Preferred Requirements
Experience in specialized 3D cell cultures is a plus, but not required. Experience with mouse handling, injections, and monitoring is also desirable.
