Summary:
Performs complex research-related work requiring advanced working knowledge of
soybean entomology and pest management for sustainable production of soybeans.
Research questions will be addressed through detailed laboratory, greenhouse and field
methodologies, which may include implementation of both established protocols and
development of novel protocols. Research results are analyzed, interpreted and
summarized in scientific publications and/or grant progress reports. Works
independently with guidance in only the most complex, solution-resistant situations.
Responsibilities:
1) 40%: Design research protocols and conduct laboratory, greenhouse and field
experiments, independently or collaborating with staff and faculty both within and
outside of the department, to improve the understanding of the biology and
management of soybean pests
2) 30%: Perform data analyses and modeling with existing and newly collected data to
improve pest management decision making; interpret results and write scientific
publications, grant progress reports, and grant proposals
3) 10%: Lead undergraduate students; assist in mentoring graduate students
4) 15%: Summarizing existing research data and on-going research for publication
5) 5%: Presenting research results/updates at professional, scientific, and outreach
meetings
Independence and Decision Making:
Works under general supervision with latitude to make decisions on own work (i.e.
selecting from a few alternatives, timing of tasks, determining use of resources, etc.).
While guided by established laboratory protocols detailed in standard operating
procedures for the laboratory and in published entomology literature for field,
greenhouse and laboratory research, incumbents can alter the order in which work is
performed, but usually not the expected end result which can be improved but not
qualitatively changed.
Complexity and Problem Solving: Substantial planning and scheduling are needed in
order to obtain and align resources when and where needed for project completion.
Research problems vary in complexity. Technical problems require deep entomological
knowledge and creativity. More complex research-related work assignments require
scientific/working knowledge of entomology and pest management. Examples may
include the planning and setting of multiple, simultaneous experiments,
development/modification of protocols, and selection/implementation of complex
statistical analyses.
Scope of Measurable Effect: The outcomes of research in soybean entomology have a
direct impact on soybean farmers, agricultural industries, and the scientific community.
Entomological research efforts will enhance the efficiency, cost-effectiveness,
timeliness, and optimize allocation of resources in research activities. The incumbent in
this role will play a crucial part in facilitating outcomes that align with grant reporting
guidelines, project objectives, and the requirements of stakeholders. The research
findings will benefit the welfare of other staff, students, and faculty by providing
essential inputs in the form of information or finalized materials.
Physical/Environmental Demands: Position may require driving for an extended periods
of time to visit multiple sites to collect samples, and walking on uneven terrain under
field conditions and exposure to spring, summer and fall weather in Minnesota.
Laboratory work may entail extended periods of time working on a laboratory bench or
with a microscope. Experiments may require the use of insecticides.
Supervision: Acts as mentor/coach or provide guidance; lead project teams and
collaborative efforts; interview applicants; assign, schedule, direct work, and/or evaluate
the work of colleagues and/or coworkers.
Budget Responsibilities: Assists with development of budgets for proposals and assists
with oversight of spending on project accounts.
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
* MS and experience to equal 2 years or a BA/BS and experience to equal 4 years
* Demonstrated written and oral communication, and quantitative analysis skills
* Experience in managing laboratory-, greenhouse- and field-based soybean pest
management research projects
* Ability to work independently
Preferred qualifications:
* PhD in entomology or a related field
* Experience in research on remote sensing; the biology, sampling, control
(biological and chemical) of insects
* Experience rearing insects
* Experience with advanced statistical and quantitative methods
* Interest in extension/outreach related to crop pest management
