Job Description

 
Conservation Education Camp Directors have overall on-site responsibility for instructional summer camps operated by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for children ages 11 to 17. They supervise the administration of their assigned camp's environmental education and recreation programs, insure the health, safety, and welfare of all campers, volunteers and staff, and reside at the camps.

Conservation Education Camp Directors perform a variety of critical tasks related to the overall operation of a summer environmental education camp for youth.

• Develop and implement curriculum for Summer Camp Program
• Develop and conduct comprehensive training programs for all staff, including counselors, cooks, camp aides and volunteers
• Develop a fire plan and search and rescue plans. Organize and implement drills and evaluate results to ensure the overall safety and welfare of staff and campers
• Promote and maintain positive public relations with sponsors, parents and the local community. Greet visitors to inform them of the facility's programs and goals
• Interact continually with campers to develop rapport. Intervene during stressful times when campers are experiencing problems such as homesickness, disruptiveness, difficulty in respecting the privacy or property of others, etc.
• Supervise all staff
• Make specific assignments based upon employees' qualifications/certifications Evaluate staff work performance and advise on more effective teaching and training techniques
• Coordinate dining hall, campfire and other general group activities
• Manage facility operations
• Conduct daily inspections, assess the need for facility or equipment repairs and arrange completion with regional field operations supervisor
• Plan menus with cooks. Arrange for ordering and delivery of supplies
• Complete forms and reports according to Department policy. Prepare accident and injury reports, weekly report on camp operations, facility conditions, special programs and final reports with recommendations for the next year.
