The CUNY Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM) works in partnership with the University’s academic and administrative offices and the 26 colleges to promote CUNY’s unique mission and transformative role as an engine of social mobility. The office includes seven divisions: Communications, Creative, Marketing, Social Media, Multimedia, CUNY TV, and Citizenship Now! Together, the teams manage all aspects of press and public relations, editorial content, art design, publishing, social media, advertisement, web development, TV, video and podcast production to tell the story of the premier urban public university in the United States.
Reporting to the Web Director, the Web Designer will be a member of the Web Team. The Web Team, part of the Creative Team, operates under the guidance of the Creative Director. The Creative Team is responsible for overseeing the University’s visual identity and includes both Web and Design Teams. The Web Team manages the entire CUNY.edu website, including content management systems and the websites of several CUNY campuses and other University entities. Additionally, the team supports the online components of the Communications and Marketing (OCM) department, encompassing the social media, electronic communications, and multimedia areas.
Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
- Creates visually appealing, engaging, and responsive web designs and templates.
- Utilizes WordPress, HTML, CSS and JavaScript to build new designs.
- Populates page templates with relevant page content, including photos, text, and other media.
- Designs landing pages for marketing and advertising campaigns.
- Collaborates with developers to implement responsive, interactive, and accessible designs.
- Conducts usability testing and gathers feedback to iterate and improve designs.
- Optimizes web pages for speed and performance, ensuring a seamless user experience.
- Utilizes best SEO practices in designing and creating pages.
- Ensures all designs are consistent with the University’s branding guidelines and enhances the overall user experience.
- Assists with:
- Conducting research on key audiences, including prospective students, current students, university alumni, and the broader New Yorker community.
- Conducting research on web design trends, including through sites like awwwards, behance, Adobe, and other leading design organizations.
- Works with project managers to assess project scope and client needs.
