A Crime Analyst performs statistical and analytical research to support the Police Service Bureau of the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, focusing on identifying crime patterns and law enforcement trends. This role involves creating a variety of data-driven reports on crime statistics and delivering actionable insights to inform management decisions. Success in this position requires strong initiative, independent decision-making, and the ability to operate effectively within the Data Analytics & Intelligence Division of the Administrative Services Bureau.

Essential Functions

Data Collection and Analysis:
  • Initiates and plans methods to identify, collect, and analyze data;
  • Conducts research regarding crime and law enforcement activity relevant to department operations;
  • Performs hot spot analysis, identifying high-crime areas, community problem zones, and high-traffic collision intersections;
  • Employs GIS tools to analyze spatial data, producing crime maps that highlight hotspots and trends for strategic planning.

Crime Pattern Identification and Trend Analysis:

  • Applies crime analysis techniques and statistical methodologies to determine crime patterns, forecast trends, and optimize resource deployment;
  • Conducts regular quality assurance checks to ensure data reliability, adjusting and weighing raw data as necessary;
  • Provides actionable insights to management, offering advice on crime trends and analysis in line with current best practices.

Report Preparation and Communication:

  • Prepares comprehensive conclusions and forecasts for management consideration;
  • Analyzes police reports and departmental data to identify patterns and trends;
  • Creates and delivers presentations using charts, graphs, dashboards, and other visual tools in both written and verbal formats.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Provides analytical support to the Police Services Bureau and partners with law enforcement agencies to share information and support joint investigations;
  • Collaborates with law enforcement personnel to develop effective crime prevention strategies based on analytical findings;
  • Assists in developing and implementing crime analysis procedures and protocols, participating in training new team members.

Professional Development and Knowledge Maintenance:

  • Stays updated on the latest research and advancements in criminology and crime analysis techniques;
  • Attends scheduled law enforcement trainings, meetings, or conferences as assigned;
  • Maintains a skill set aligned with evolving law enforcement needs, including advances in research methodologies and technology.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Develops reporting techniques tailored to user needs;
  • Performs related duties as required.

Job Requirements


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a related field with coursework in computer sciences, statistics, or sociology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a law enforcement agency is preferred.

Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive understanding of law enforcement agency operations and the basics of the criminal justice system;
  • Expertise in crime analysis methods, techniques, and information systems;
  • Proficiency in statistics, statistical methodologies for tracking and communicating data, and computer-based information systems.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in operating standard office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, statistical tools, and visualization platforms such as Tableau and Power BI;
  • Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS), such as ArcGIS, for spatial data analysis;
  • Ability to read, edit, and interpret SQL queries to ensure data accuracy and support data-driven decision-making.

Problem-Solving and Analytical Skills:

  • Strong ability to identify, research, and solve problems related to crime patterns and law enforcement activities;
  • Skilled in developing accurate, actionable insights from complex data sets.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and collaborating with stakeholders;
  • Ability to convey technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team to achieve organizational goals. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required to pass a criminal background check and polygraph;
  • This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment and the employee in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions;
  • Requires sitting at a desk for long periods of time, up to 8 hours and ability to lift up to 20 lbs.;
  • Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, to permit the employee to function in a general office environment and accomplish tasks.
