In this role, you will be responsible for the production of innovative, appropriate, cost-effective, designs, drawings, and specifications in structural engineering for assigned projects. You will maintain professional registration and sign/seal documents prepared under your supervision. In addition, you will be responsible to assist the Group Discipline Leader, Group A/E Principal, and A/E Discipline Leader in training and mentoring staff, developing group and corporate standards, and other assigned tasks.
Job Responsibilities:
Application of Building Systems Knowledge
Produces pricing and proposal presentation documents
Utilizes the various model building and materials codes
Develops complete structural system design of various building/construction types of varying complexity
Assists with updates to standard details/specs
Design
Analysis
Prepares clear, complete, and concise calculations including software models, and provides the appropriate level of connection design as required
Presents advantages/disadvantages of different structural design schemes to project team
Detailing
Develops all details necessary for assigned projects
Coordinates work with other disciplines. Performs interdisciplinary coordination checks to minimize deficiencies, errors and omissions in drawings and specifications
Incorporates client criteria into design documents
Prepares design criteria for all projects and assures compliance with proposal/client criteria
Signs and seals design documents when assigned as Structural Engineer of Record
Responsible for the production of well-organized structural documents, calculations and specifications which are accurate, clear, concise, and complete
Participates in bid reviews when requested
Participates in design reviews with the design team at 30% and 100% on all assigned projects
Performs peer reviews of documents of other structural engineers
Performs site visits & prepares observation/follow-up phase reports documenting progress and
Prepares punch lists upon structure
Prepares field orders, addenda and record
Reviews all structural-related testing and inspection
Construction Support
Responds to all RFI's and review submittals for compliance in a timely manner
Participates in appropriate preconstruction/preparatory meetings
Participates and prepares reports in appropriate FWIP (first work in place)/Initial Phase observations.
Performs site visits & prepares observation/follow-up phase reports documenting progress and deficiencies
Prepares punch lists upon structure completion
Prepares field orders, addenda, and record drawings
Reviews all structural-related testing and inspection reports
Project Management
Communicates effectively with external/internal Customers and staff in a professional manner conveying pertinent project information as required. Attends project meetings as requested
Directs technical efforts of Structural Interns, Designers and Technicians assigned to their projects
Plans production of structural work for assigned projects, and assures adherence to discipline/industry standards
Planning, Scheduling, and Profitability
Prepares budgets for structural work on prospects/proposals, monitors progress, and completes projects within the stated fee
Professional Development
Desires to become registered as an SE (Structural Engineer)
Attends seminars and conferences as necessary to maintain professional competency and satisfy required continuing education requirements
Provides training to staff from base knowledge and seminars/conferences attended
Keeps apprised of new structural technologies and assists in the incorporation of the new technologies into the A/E practice
Actively participates in local and national professional organization(s) including involvement at the director and officer levels
Leadership
Mentors younger engineers, interns, and designers regarding structural engineering and career development being cognizant of the different learning styles of mentees
Leads structural staff working under their direction
Communicates with Group Lead Structural Engineer regarding leadership concerns
Participates in management and leadership training as requested by Group Lead and/or Chief Structural Engineers
Education/Experience:
Typical minimum of a 4-year engineering degree and a minimum of 3 years of structural design and application engineering experience
Specific Knowledge, Skills, License, Certifications:
Building System Knowledge
Good knowledge of various building/construction types/complexities
Good understanding of all model building/material codes
Good understanding of structural design process from concepts through
Good understanding of standard details/specs
Ability to quickly develop structural design strategy/concepts/solutions
Ability to work independently on a variety of simple projects and large complex projects
Good presentation skills
Good written and verbal communication skills
Computer skills
Ability to work with a laptop, tablet (iPad or Microsoft equivalent), and mobile devices
Ability to access project information remotely when working outside the office using VPN and/or Citrix
Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Working understanding (or a 3-month progression in understanding) of the following structural software
Concrete Anchor Design (Hilti Profis Anchor/Powers Design Assist 360/Simpson Anchor Design), Adapt, Enercalc, E-TABS, Mathcad, RAM Structural System (RAM Steel, RAM Concrete, RAM Frame, RAM Foundation), Ram Elements, Ram Concept, RISA, SAFE, SAP, SP Mats, SP Slab, Tedds
Ability (or a 1-year progression in ability) to utilize Newforma Programs
Newforma Project Center, Newforma Cloud, Project Teams, Capture, Tasks, and Plans
Ability to work within both AutoCAD and Revit or other 3D modeling software
