About the Job



Duties/Responsibilities:

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher for a position in the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. The main focus of the postdoc position is to conduct laboratory and field investigation related to harmful algal blooms. Background in fluid mechanics and laboratory experiments is preferred. Data and image processing skills are also preferred. The postdoc scholar will have the opportunity to learn different skills, including microfluidic and flume-scale techniques, and get involved in a range of projects related to erosion, harmful algal blooms, and other environmental issues. Responsibilities include conducting experimental, computational, and theoretical multi-phase research, publishing scientific papers, and assisting supervisor in grant application and project reporting, and helping supervise students. The initial appointment is for the period of 12 months. The appointment is renewable pending the availability of funds and satisfactory performance and progress review.

Qualifications



Required/Preferred Qualifications:

Candidate must have a PhD degree in mechanical engineering, mechanics, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, environment engineering, geo-engineering, applied mathematics, physics, atmospheric science, physical oceanography, or a related field. Experience with experimental, computational, and theoretical work on multi-phase particle-fluid flows is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are preferred along with a strong publication record.

About the Department



Program/Unit Description:

This position is located in the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL), an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research center of the College of Science and Engineering. SAFL research is focused at fundamental fluid dynamics and the intersection of fluid mechanics with major societal challenges in energy, environment and health. The lab integrates cutting-edge experimental work at laboratory and field scales with advanced computational tools and theory to obtain innovative, science-based solutions to fluid-flow challenges.

Research is led at SAFL by 16 full-time faculty members with appointments in Departments of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Earth Sciences, and Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics in the College of Science and Engineering, as well as in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior in the College of Biological Sciences. SAFL personnel includes research and support staff members, postdoctoral associates, graduate students, as well as visiting researchers and undergraduate interns conducting research at SAFL.
