Environmental Health and Safety Specialist  

Company Overview: 
Empirical Systems Aerospace, Inc. (ESAero) is seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist to join our team. ESAero is a growing aerospace company in the San Luis Obispo area and provides services which include but are not limited to rapid system development, on-demand niche engineering, hands-on development/testing, and small UAS aerospace system manufacturing.  

**This position is fully on-site at ESAero in San Luis Obispo, CA**  

Job Summary:  

We are seeking an Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Specialist to lead safety and security efforts within our engineering and production facilities. This role focuses on fostering a safety-first culture by developing and implementing EH&S policies, conducting safety inspections, and training employees on safety standards. The Specialist will oversee compliance with regulatory requirements, maintain safety equipment, and manage chemical safety protocols. Additionally, they will collaborate with teams to address safety concerns, guide the safe operation of equipment, and support audits and inspections by regulatory and insurance entities. This position plays a key role in ensuring a secure and compliant work environment for all employees. 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:  

  • Promotes EH&S and security policies and practices throughout the engineering and production facilities 

  • Supports the implementation of new EH&S and security policies through employee training and production floor support 

  • Leads Safety Committees to foster a safety-first culture and concerns brought forward by members; records and distributes meeting minutes 

  • Regularly conducts facility walk-throughs to ensure PPE and general safety practice compliance; accompanies departments as needed on monthly inspections 

  • Assists Facility Manager with regulatory visits and Emergency/Fire Department and/or insurance company inspections 

  • Maintains all applicable OSHA mandated programs and standards in master policy manual 

  • Supports employees concerns by investigating, providing recommended solutions, and partnering with site personnel as needed 

  • Assists Operations in training all new employees on ESAero EHS programs and all current employees on required annual/bi-annual trainings 

  • Ensures all safety equipment is maintained at all times and records appropriate inspection documentation 

  • Performs various PPE fit testing for all impacted employees and ensures constant availability of all PPE needed across the facility 

  • Reviews all chemicals prior to utilization in the facility and records all required MSDS information; ensures departmental manuals are updated as needed 

  • Ensures all chemical containers are clearly labeled with warnings as needed and match the MSDS 

  • Assists with annual Lockout/Tagout Program audit; conducts spot checks during facility walk-throughs 

  • Reviews all new inventory forms on new machinery or systems in consideration of appropriate LOTO procedures 

  • Assists Operations with training and development of forklift/marklift/industrial lift programs, procedures and safety checklists 

  • Perform safety reviews for engineering test procedures and manufacturing work instructions 

  • Assist Engineering in reviewing designs for hazards and risks 

Qualifications/Requirements:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in EH&S, Occupational Safety or related field 

  • Prior experience supporting/building successful safety cultures 

  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal EH&S compliance standards 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint 

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail 

  • Ability to present in front of large groups 

  • HAZWOPER and Medical Responder, certification a plus 

  • US Citizen/Permanent Resident  

  • Able to work onsite at ESAero Office locations in San Luis Obispo 

  • Willing to relocate to San Luis Obispo, CA
