This Student Nurse Technician position is located within the Nursing Service at the Bedford VA Healthcare System, located in Bedford, MA. The SNT functions under the direct supervision of the RN. Students receive an orientation to an assignment and perform allied nursing functions defined as direct and indirect activities related to patient care as appropriately delegated by the accountable RN. This announcement is open to current students who are accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking an undergraduate degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled). Students must be a sophomore going into their junior year OR a junior going into their senior year in an accredited Bachelor of Nursing program.
This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. Incumbent will be given opportunities to provide basic nursing care and procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the academic setting and validated by VA staff in order to provide care to patients/residents with acute to chronic conditions in a health care setting. function as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving preventive, acute, sub-acute chronic, maintenance, and hospice care. The distinguishing factor is that patient/resident assignments typically involve more complex nursing needs which can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements. Student Trainees at this level also assume more of a peer education/mentorship role.
