As a Surgical Technician, you will help circulate duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse. These duties include, but are not limited to:Â
• Setting up the sterile table and performing scrub functions.Â
• Assisting in draping the patient as well as gowning and gloving surgical team members. Â
• Collecting, identifying, and labeling specimens removed during surgical procedures and giving the specimens to circulator for disposition.Â

Responsibilities:
- Scrubs, gowns and gloves according to established policies and procedures.
- Organizes and maintains instruments and supplies in such a manner that promotes safe and efficient transfer to and from surgeon and assistants.
- Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeon with regard to instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies.
- Assists in the preparation and draping of the patient and operative area.
- Maintains aseptic technique at all times.
- Performs appropriate needle, sponge, and instrument counts with the registered nurse and reports correctness and discrepancies according to standard.
- Cares for all specimens properly.
- Assists in the application of dressings and casts.
- Assembles all instruments and equipment for decontamination according to policies and procedures.
- Assists in the maintenance of equipment to insure proper function and safety.
- Assists with routine and terminal cleaning and other housekeeping duties as directed.
- Applies electrocautery and instrumentation directly to tissues as appropriate during surgical intervention.
- Assists by handling tissue in dissection and suturing, utilizing appropriate instruments.
- Provides site exposure of relevant areas via mechanical or manual assistance.
- Performs subcutaneous and skin closures and applies post-operative casts, splints, slings, etc.
- Assists in the transportation of patients.
- Assists in restocking surgical supplies as needed.
- Functions in all areas of central processing to promote efficient utilization of instruments and equipment as needed.
- Assists in preparation of procedure/case carts for surgical cases.
- Participates in unit and center performance improvement activities.
- Assists in orientation of other center personnel as appropriate.
- Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure.
- Maintains required CPR (BLS).
- Follows system and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.
- Other duties as assigned
Education:
- Graduate of an approved surgical technology program or the equivalent.
Certifications:
- Obtain CST certification within one year of appointment to position. Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS).
Complexity of Work:
- Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.
- Knowledgeable and competent in suturing techniques.
Work Experience:
- One year work experience as a surgical technologist.
Physical Requirements:
- Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
- Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
