Position Summary:
This position is for a senior product development scientist located in Rochester, MN. This position will formulate new skincare products utilizing Rion’s unique biologic technology. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience as a cosmetic formulator, strong laboratory skills, deep knowledge of the skin care industry, strong technical writing, and exceptional teamwork. This is a hands-on role to support both the current product line and future development of cutting-edge skincare products.
Job Responsibilities:
• New Formulation Development
o Own the new product development process including:
o Managing new requests
o Generating target product profiles
o Executing lab-scale development work
o Managing sample production and feedback
o Authoring product development reports
o Assisting with technology transfer to manufacturing
• Management of Existing product line
o Reformulation of existing products as necessary for cost and ingredient challenges
o Provide and communicate technical expertise on ingredients and formulations
• Regulatory Affairs
o Ingredient safety assessments
o Management of new ingredient SDSs
o Understanding of guidance and regulations pertaining to cosmetic products
• Laboratory Management
o Effectively communicate cross-functionally with manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and customers
o Independently manage the new product development laboratory including lab equipment, consumables, and ingredients.
o Research new vendors for raw materials and remain up to date on current trends and challenges in the skincare market.
o Manage relationships with new ingredient vendors
• Quality Control and Analytical Development
o Assist in new QC method development as required for new formulations
o Collaborate with QC in setting new product specifications
o Contribute as a technical expert to laboratory investigations, out of spec deviations, and root cause analysis
o Write technical documents in response to QC investigations
Skills and Qualifications:
• Advanced formulation skills and technical knowledge of formulation chemistry
• Strong background in general lab skills including knowledge of QC testing
• Understanding of cosmetic regulations (FDA, cGMP)
• Robust technical writing
• Proven ability to manage relationships with external suppliers
• Project management skills
• Team player with excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication
• Exceptional attention to detail and high level of accuracy and organization
Education and Experience Requirements
• BS in chemistry, cosmetic science, or related field required; advanced degree preferred
• 8+ years of skin care formulation experience
• Experience working with biologics preferred
