Bachelor’s Degree in education, counseling, or related field AND two years of higher education experience

Job Description:
The Academic Advisor works alongside the Director and Assistant Director in providing support and guidance to a caseload of 45-55 students while coordinating the program’s efforts of academic preparedness and promoting holistic student development. The Academic Advisor contributes to a positive campus climate by maintaining strong relationships with members of the Carleton community. This is a .83 FTE long-term benefits-eligible position (40 hours/week during the academic year, summers off). The TRIO program is grant-funded through September 2025.

The TRIO/Student Support Services (SSS) program is a federally funded grant program through the United States Department of Education. The program serves and assists students from underrepresented backgrounds (First-Generation, Low-Income, Individuals with disabilities). Carleton College has hosted a TRIO program consecutively since 1981. As part of the Division of Student Life, TRIO/SSS works collaboratively across campus departments to offer holistic support and programming for students as they navigate their college experience while promoting campus-wide initiatives.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

Serve as a Liberal Arts Academic Advisor; provides holistic student advising on academic, personal, career and financial matters.
Maintain a caseload of 45-55 student participants and monitor their academic progress.
In conjunction with staff, coordinate efforts in developing financial literacy opportunities for student.
Provide students with effective study strategies.
Connect with campus constituents as appropriate, with specific attention to groups interested in retaining and supporting first-generation students.
Support orientation, student recognition activities, and campus-wide first-generation programming.
Assists Director in developing and facilitating TRIO program activities, including campus visits, cultural events, and workshops on topics relevant to TRIO/SSS student success (e.g., study skills, time management, financial literacy).
Additional Job Responsibilities:

Maintain timely and accurate records, including contact logs, case notes, and files.
Assist with data management, surveys, and program evaluation.
In collaboration with campus partners, explore efforts to support students underprepared for quantitative work in appropriate introductory courses or newly designed courses.
Serve as the TRIO/SSS liaison on Student Life Division Committees.
