JOB PURPOSE

The Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for managing the lifeguard team and safety operations for the Avery Recreation Pool and on occasion for the Avery Aquatics Center. Duties include staff management, training, scheduling, providing customer service, and supporting facility oversight, aquatics programs and special events.

 

CORE DUTIES

Staff Management (70%)

  • Daily management, supervision and leadership of lifeguards and lifeguard supervisors.
  • Staff recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, scheduling, motivation and retention of student and part-time personnel.
  • Assist with planning, organizing and facilitating monthly in-service training.
  • Maintain and track lifeguard employee training certifications.
  • Lead in-service training and lifeguard training courses.

 

Facility Management (30%)

  • Assist with the day-to-day oversight of the Avery Recreation Pool.
  • Support the implementation, review, and recommendations related to facility policies and procedures including facility access, emergency action plans, and standard operating procedures.    
  • Support the inspection of the pool facilities and ensure they are compliant with federal, state, and county public health and safety regulations.
  • Assist with the inventory and maintenance of equipment related to the lifeguards, aquatics programs, and facility emergency preparedness.
  • Serve on Recreation and Wellness committees as directed.

 

Ancillary Responsibilities

  • Engage in professional development as approved to keep abreast of current trends and issues.
  • Support the oversight and development of aquatics programs.
  • Maintain all necessary certifications related to job responsibilities.
  • Exercise flexibility to work evening or weekend hours as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including serving on relevant committees serving as proxy for the Assistant Director of Aquatics

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS POSITION, YOU WILL BRING:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in supporting the oversight of aquatics staff.
  • Ability to lead a large, diverse team of part-time staff, including student management strategies.
  • Demonstrates leadership traits including effective communication, supervisory skills, and the ability to manage workflow.
  • Knowledge of current risk management practices in recreation and aquatics facilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Versed knowledge of current aquatics approaches, trends, risk management, and best practices.
  • Ability to coordinate daily activities including work scheduling, quality assurance, monitoring of activities, and supervision of personnel.
  • Ability to meet expected deadlines and schedules.
  • Engagement in NIRSA, IHRSA, or other recreation or aquatics professional associations.
  • Working knowledge of applications such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and other technology platforms used within the campus recreation industry.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.

 

Certifications and Licenses

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.  
  • Must have or obtain within six months of hire: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI), American Red Cross First Aid Instructor, and American Red Cross CPR/AED Instructor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*

  • Ability to exert physical effort, including the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, bending, squatting, reaching, or being on feet for long periods of time.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, and grasp lightly/fine manipulation.

  

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to work non-standard hours when required to ensure success of events and programs.
  • Position requires the ability to move freely about facilities and the flexibility of working from various working locations on campus.
  • On-site management of activities during evenings and early mornings as needed.
  • Occasional weekend responsibilities.
  • Exposure to weather elements possible aligned with job responsibilities of managing an outdoor pool
  • This is an in-person, 5 day-a-week position with reporting flexibility based on coverage needs.
  • May be exposed to noise > 80dB TWA.
  • May work at heights 4-10ft.

DAPER’s Integrity

This position, along with all DAPER coaches and staff, is responsible for the integrity of Stanford’s intercollegiate athletics program, recreation and wellness department, and for the reputation of Stanford University. This position is responsible for ensuring that your involvement with DAPER activities maintains the integrity of the University’s reputation and does not negatively impact the relationship between the University and its faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Additionally, this position must comply with University policies and procedures, NCAA, and conference rules and regulations.

 

The expected pay range for this position is $66,560 to $70,000 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
