SCHEDULE 
         25 hours per week.  Weekends and Holidays required.


TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION, YOU MUST POSSESS

CPR Certification (American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or American Heart CPR for the Health Care Provider). 

First Aid Certification (American Red Cross First Aid or American Heart Heartsaver First Aid). 

Lifeguard Training Certification (American Red Cross Lifeguarding, YMCA Lifeguard Training, or Previous ocean lifeguarding experience). 

 
PRE-EMPLOYMENT TESTING INFORMATION:
Qualified applicants will be contacted and invited via email and required to participate in pre-employment swim and rescue testing.  Testing will be held at 8:00am on To Be Determined Date.. You will be scheduled for this testing after it has been determined that the minimum qualifications and licenses requirements have been met.  
You will not be allowed to participate in the swim test if you have not been invited by Human Resources via email.



GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
 
Performs responsible protective service (ocean rescue) work in ocean rescue operations in accordance with established guidelines and policies; does related work as required. Work is performed under immediate supervision.
 

Essential Functions

  • Observes beach and ocean from tower for unusual and/or unsafe conditions and activities.
  • Signals boaters, surfers, and jet skiers to stay out of safe swimming areas.
  • Maintains an awareness of, prevents, and reacts to life-threatening situations.
  • Patrols beach on foot, warns beach patrons of dangerous conditions and situations.
  • Carries reserve boards, oxygen resuscitators and first aid kits to and from the beach.
  • Treats land patrons for minor first-aid injuries.

RELATED TASKS:
  • Monitors tide changes, water, and wind conditions and warns beach patron of changes.
  • Informs beach patron of various City ordinances and enforces same.
  • Responds to questions concerning ordinances and beach or ocean conditions.
  • Opens and closes lifeguard towers; ensures equipment is present and in good working order.
  • Records beach and ocean conditions on billboard.
  • Assists with programs, classes, and special events.
  • Participates in morning workout and physical fitness exercises.
  • Performs related tasks as required. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the laws, ordinances and policies related to emergency services in ocean rescue.

General knowledge of ocean rescue services practices and procedures.

Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

Ability to pass pre-employment and annual requalification tests.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. 

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
CERTIFICATIONS / PROFESSIONAL LICENSES:
  • CPR Certification (American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or American Heart CPR for the Health Care Provider) is required.
  • First Aid Certification (American Red Cross First Aid or American Heart Heartsaver First Aid) is required.
  • Lifeguard Training Certification (American Red Cross Lifeguarding, YMCA Lifeguard Training, or Previous ocean lifeguarding experience) is required.
After initial employment training period, employee must meet training and certification requirements of United States Lifeguarding Association agency certification program. After initial employment training period, must possess American Red Cross Emergency Response Certification.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possession of a valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.
  • Essential for full time employee during declared storm emergency.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
 
Must have 20/30 corrected vision in both eyes, correct color vision and depth perception. Must be able to lift and carry articles weighing up to 50 lbs. and push articles weighing up to 150 lbs.  Must be able to wear safety glasses, goggles, safety harness, gloves, and face shield. Exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Exposure to electricity, heights of up to 15 ft., noise, moving mechanical parts, confined spaces, vibration, dust, vapors, fumes, poisons, animals/insects, mist, gases, irritants, asphyxiants, and bloodborne pathogens.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible to receive Paid Leave and to contribute to the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, a part-time employee must have worked at least 1,040 hours in the prior fiscal year

PAID LEAVE: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will receive twelve (12) hours of Paid Leave on October 1st. This Paid Leave shall be used no later than September 30th of that fiscal year or it will be forfeited. These hours may not accumulate and may only be granted with the approval of the employee's supervisor. This paid leave has no cash value at separation of employment.

MISSION SQUARE 457 DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will be allowed to participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The City will not provide any matching funds.
