About the Job



This is a temporary posted position that is limited to a maximum of two years in length. Continuation beyond the initial appointment period is contingent on satisfactory performance and funding availability.
Position Summary: This is 100% time on-campus position to support research efforts primarily in pea genetics, genomics, and breeding, as well as soybeans. Responsible for performing professional laboratory work and field studies involving methods and techniques of agriculture, plant breeding and genetics. This is a dynamic position; we are looking for someone who can handle shifting responsibilities throughout the year and bring constructive ideas as we grow this research program. Applicant will assist in greenhouse duties such as planting, maintenance, making crosses, and harvesting; field-based duties such as planting, data collection, and harvest; dry-lab duties such as threshing and seed processing; and wet-lab duties such as DNA extraction, PCR-based assays, and tissue culture. Receives some guidance and direction.

Job Duties:
(65%) Perform field, greenhouse, and growth chamber work; assist with planting, phenotyping, harvesting, plant maintenance, making crosses, troubleshooting problems that occur, an
logistical support. Assist in designing research projects; independently plan and perform complex, multi-step experimental analyses; record all experimental protocols and data;
organize and interpret experimental results.

(15%) Perform and assist lab bench work focusing on DNA preparation and molecular marker analysis. This may include nucleic acid extraction, PCR, and electrophoresis. Run sample
analyses. Prepare and run samples on various instruments and cleaning equipment.

(10%) Seasonal and miscellaneous duties as assigned by member of the pea and soybean research teams. May include activities such as plant tissue culture, in vitro propagation of plant
and bacterial cultures, and molecular genetics techniques.

(5%) Keep detailed records of experiments and procedures in laboratory notebooks, electronic databases, spreadsheets, and web-based applications.

(5%) Help monitor and train undergraduate student workers. This includes training workers in lab and field safety and enforcing best practices.

Qualifications



Required Qualifications: BA/BS and one year of related experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal five years.

Position involves comparing, verifying and reconciling data to help department achieve overall objectives; experience with plant growth and maintenance; able to perform manual labor in field, greenhouse and plant growth chamber settings; strong organizational skills; ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers and in team settings.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA extractions), experience using field equipment (tractors, planters, threshers), experience with data management and/or analysis.
