General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, a premier provider of ordnance weapons and tactical systems to the U.S. Department of Defense and allied nations, has an opening for a Sr R&D Engineer to join our Bothell, WA Team. Performs development engineering in support of contracted programs, B&P activities, and IRAD efforts. Assists in new business and follow-on activities. Independently applies a high degree of creative ability, engineering skill, and judgment in applying engineering principles in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, mechanics, and thermodynamics to the design, development, qualification, and production of gas generators, pressurization systems, inflation systems and guidance systems.
Major Position Responsibilities
Plans, schedules, conducts and coordinates detailed phases of engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope.
Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices, but which may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting requirements, unsuitability of conventional approaches, and difficult coordination requirements. Makes full use and application of standard engineering principles, theories, concepts, techniques, and company technical history.
Understands all conventional aspects of the functional area of the assignment.
Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.
Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
Understands and is capable of implementing standard approaches to problem prevention and problem solution.
Works closely with other functional organizations giving technical direction that establishes technical approach, priorities, and expedites the design and manufacturing test of company products.
Independently develops end-items, devices, components, modules, and subsystems, which generally involve standard approaches, but which may require employment of non-conventional methods and techniques.
Directly organizes and coordinates technical aspects of the analysis, design, development, and qualification activities. Assures that the analyses are appropriate, based on correct ground rules and assumptions, and that the analyses' conclusions are correctly utilized by design. Other duties as assigned.
Maintains a well-organized, neat and safe work area. Immediately terminates any unsafe activities and advises the EH&S contact of the same.
Demonstrates and promotes teamwork and cooperation with team members at all levels in the organization to solve problems and improve processes.
Basic Qualifications
Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in specialty areas and a good knowledge of principles and practices of related engineering disciplines.
Working understanding of basic engineering principals, theories, and concepts, with a working understanding of thermal and structural engineering concepts.
Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications for the solution to specific engineering problems.
Demonstrated technical skill and problem-solving skills.
Requires good presentation skills and interpretation skills.
Ability to oversee other functional areas in the accomplishment of hardware, planning and test tasks.
Possesses or able to quickly learn necessary analytical skills to conduct simple performance analysis to support parametric analysis of designs.
Able to critically evaluate test data results and formulate recommendations for test system or hardware design.
Ability to work with other functional areas to produce hardware and perform tests.
Ability to translate general customer requirements into products, specific requirements and program elements.
Ability to perform in a fast-paced independent atmosphere.
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in the English language.
Computer proficiency (MS Office applications - Excel, Project, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) in support of analytical efforts.
Ability to work with all levels of personnel in an efficient and effective manner.
Education and/or Experience: Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical or Chemical engineering. At least five (5) years related experience, Master of Science Degree in Engineering and at least three (3) years related experience, or Ph.D. Degree and no experience required.

Pay Range (USD)
$85,733 - $159,218
