Associate General Counsel

Summary/Objective:
The Associate General Counsel is a multifaceted role that will report to the General Counsel and provide legal support for all aspects of the development, construction, management and operation of a national affordable housing portfolio. Candidates should be able to deliver a wide range of legal services in furtherance of the organization’s business objectives and pivot quickly between diverse matters.

Exempt (not overtime eligible)
Hybrid office schedule – Currently 3 days in the office/2 days work from home
Essential Functions/Responsibilities - Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Closely assist and support general counsel and the development team in acquisition, disposition, financing, and refinancing affordable housing transactions; Draft, review and negotiate closing documents; Extensive experience closing LIHTC transactions required
- Draft, review and negotiate general commercial contracts for property management, security and construction affiliates, including vendor, service, security and construction agreements; Provide legal support and guidance on day-to-day business operations
- Draft and negotiate commercial leases and assist with management of commercial tenant relationships (retail spaces, rooftop cell tower/solar and laundry services)
- Liaise with outside counsel and internal personnel on personal injury, housing discrimination, general commercial and other litigation matters; Oversee discovery responses and verification of pleadings
- Provide general legal support as required by business units
Requirements:
- JD degree and active membership with the NYS Bar
- At least seven years of experience in real estate transactions with affordable housing experience; Extensive experience leading transaction closings required
- Understanding of affordable housing programs (LIHTC; HUD) required
- Ability to review and comment on a wide range of commercial contracts
- Excellent project management and organizational skills
- Strong attention to detail; Adept at learning new skills quickly
- Capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing in a fast-paced environment
- Sound business judgment
- Experience working with government agencies
- Collaborative and collegial working style
Salary/Bonus: $225,000 - $250,000 base salary; 10%-20% target bonus
