Position Overview
The Career Coach position is an integral part of the College of Education and Human Development's (CEHD) Career Services team. CEHD Career Services supports the retention, graduation and career success of CEHD students and alumni by providing holistic, inclusive and impactful resources, services and programming that intentionally engage students in all aspects of their development and career readiness.
To ensure accessibility and inclusiveness of services, the Career Coach role is dynamic and flexible including occasional evening/weekend career programming, the possibility of late afternoon/early evening appointments, and use of varied modalities (in-person, remote/virtual).

The anticipated salary range for this position is $52,000 - $56,000 (Pro 3), or $58,000 - $62,000 (Pro 4). Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.

Job Responsibilities
Career Coaching and Support - 60%

A Pro Level 3 career coach has full mastery of career counseling skills, abilities and technology. They will work with minimal supervision on career advising tasks. They may contribute to student development programming, and lead presentations and coursework curriculum that has been previously developed.

A Pro Level 4 career coach has full mastery of career counseling skills, abilities and technology. They will work with minimal supervision on career advising tasks. They may lead student development programming, lead administrative projects, lead presentations, and possibly develop coursework curriculum.

Career Coaching
Conduct one-on-one, hour-long appointments and drop-in meetings with CEHD undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent alumni.
Engage students in clarifying and understanding their values, strengths, interests, personality and multiple identities and how they influence their career decision-making and academic goals.
Understand the extracurricular, community and industry opportunities related to CEHD programs in order to support students and alumni in exploring possibilities, connect them to relevant resources, and encourage students to pursue opportunities that support their decision-making process and career goals.
Establish trust, build authentic relationships, and have meaningful, sometimes difficult conversations through various contact methods (ie. in-person or remotely).
Educate and coach students on the internship and job search processes including how to research and connect with employers; write resumes, CVs, cover letters and social media profiles; develop strong interview skills; prepare for career events; build a professional network; and negotiate job offers while recognizing and addressing potential challenges unique to each individual.
Guide students through major or career exploration and decision-making processes with compassion and optimism while challenging students to overcome barriers and set goals with clear action plans, moving them towards degree progress and career readiness.
Educate students on graduate or professional school preparation and assist them in navigating the application process.
Provide students with career assessment interpretations (MBTI, SII, etc.) and help students to recognize their unique potential and strengths.
Collaborate with CEHD academic advising and departmental colleagues on student cases.
Maintain a high level of working knowledge and understanding of University policies and CEHD practices and procedures, program requirements, resources, and student and career services across the University.
Consistently keep accurate up to date file notes using APLUS, the University of Minnesota's file note system, and follow FERPA guidelines ensuring confidentiality of student information.
Presentations, Workshops and Class Instruction
Create and lead classroom and student group presentations on career readiness topics utilizing engaging multimedia and activities that are effective for various learning styles.
Design and present workshops for specific CEHD student populations that provide tailored content and use a variety of delivery methods.
May instruct a 1-credit undergraduate career course and maintain student interactions and records.
Pro Level 4: Assist with curriculum development and course coordination of undergraduate career courses.
Resource Management & Communications
Create and regularly update career resources for students that are accessible, accurate and relevant including content on the CEHD Career Services website and print materials.
Stay current on hiring trends and salary information related to CEHD majors/programs.
Serve as a resource for Student Services and CEHD faculty and staff on major and career decision making, and the internship/job search process.
Keep well-informed on career outcomes of CEHD graduates utilizing the UMN Post-Graduate Survey, labor market information, and other data sources.
Contribute content and resources relevant to CEHD majors and degrees for distribution via various electronic media.
Pro Level 4: Lead research projects and evaluation related to building career resources.
Program Development and Coordination - 20%
Collaborate and partner with CEHD Student Services staff, departmental partners, student groups, and Alumni Relations to assist in developing and implement programming that is targeted to specific majors or careers and student populations to promote connections with Career Services and encourage students to utilize resources and participate in events.
Consult with TRIO programs to develop and implement programming to support all aspects of students' career readiness.
Consult with CEHD graduate studies administration, advisors and faculty to develop and implement programming for students and professional development for faculty and staff.
Ensure that accurate, up-to-date data is collected and analyzed.
