Position Summary

This position is to provide general technical support to the Cornish laboratory and conduct research on yeast therapeutics.  This position will expose and train the Research Staff Assistant in carrying out academic research. The incumbent will have the opportunity to spend half of their time carrying out laboratory research alongside and under the guidance of a senior student in the laboratory.

Responsibilities

Yeast Therapeutics Research

The Research Staff Assistant assists a senior student with the development of yeast therapeutics:  Engineering yeast for high titer production of biologics using high/throughput methods and characterization of proteins by ELISA and Western Blot.  Purifying and characterizing proteins by tagging technologies, FPLC, size exclusion and ion exchange chromatography, mass spec, in vitro tissue culture and biochemical assays.
 
Prepare Media and Stocks for Routine Molecular Biology and Yeast Genetics and Support Maintenance of Major Equipment for the Cornish laboratory
 
The Research Staff Assistant prepares buffers, culture media, and agar plates; prepares common stock items of the lab, such as antibiotics, yeast transformation reagents, master mixes, and other items listed in the Cornish Lab Techician Handbook; organizes maintenance of major equipment in the Cornish laboratory, including refrigerators and freezers, PCR machines, gel apparati, plate readers, shakers and centrifuges, FPLC, mass spec, and pipettes.
 
Ordering and Organizing Lab Inventory System
 
The Research Staff Assistant places laboratory orders on a twice weekly basis or more often as required.  Sorts items in their designated place in the lab, receives supplies and updates lab inventory system, and keeps 15 % 6/04 HR Compensation, 615 W. 131st Street, Studebaker Building 4th Floor, New York, NY 10027 2 of 2 track of low-supply items and places order before running out.
 
The Research Staff assistant will perform additional duties needed to support the Cornish laboratory.
 

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or Equivalent Required.

3 Months of Experience in a Research Environment.


Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related fields.

Two years of undergraduate research experience in a molecular biology/biochemistry/chemical biology/cell biology/microbiology laboratory.
