One year of experience in the operation of medium weight automotive equipment OR B Two years of experience in the operation of light weight automotive equipment. AND C Possession of appropriate level of NYS drivers license determined by the Highway Department.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS These duties involve responsibility in the County Highway Department for the safe and efficient operation of a variety of medium weight road building and construction equipment, including 10 wheel, double axle trucks and 4 wheel drive snowplows. This class differs from that of Motor Equipment Operator Light since it requires greater skill and there is increased responsibility for the safety of others. The incumbent is required to perform recurring manual duties related to operation of the equipment and other duties as assigned when not operating equipment. Additionally, an incumbent performs routine maintenance including lubrication and maintenance of equipment fluid levels. The work is performed under general supervision with leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over the work of a Laborer assigned to the equipment operation. The incumbent does related work as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the operation of a variety of medium weight public works and construction equipment including 10 wheel double axle trucks and 4 wheel drive snowplows Good knowledge of county geography Ability to service and make simple repairs to assigned equipment Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions Mechanical aptitude Willingness to respond to emergencies and work under adverse weather conditions Industry and dependability Physical condition commensurate to the demands of the position TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES Operates a 10 wheel double axle or tandem axle truck in connection with highway maintenance or other public works projects Operates 4 wheel drive snowplow truck including Walters, Oshkosh, or other type truck mounted snow removal equipment Performs minor mechanical repairs or servicing of automotive equipment On assignment may operate bulldozer, excavator, grader, or other type of heavy automotive equipment Services assigned equipment and maintains it in clean condition Loads and unloads trucks May perform a variety of simple manual tasks such as cleaning culverts, shoveling snow, painting, sweeping, and any other assigned task May operate a mower, tractor, or roller Performs a variety of manual tasks such as cutting trees, road patching, bridge scraping and painting, and snow shoveling when not operating equipment Performs all types of motor equipment and machinery operations On assignment, incumbents may be required to operate all levels of departmental equipment and machinery Performs manual tasks related to motor equipment operation Performs any manual work assigned within departmental operations.
