About the Job



Research Plot Technician will assist the Plant Sciences team with implementing field trials, maintaining plot or rotational plot areas, collecting data, processing samples, and organizing seasonal work tasks.

Small plot research consists of duplicating the practices of crop production but at a much smaller scale and at the same time incorporating and evaluating a new practice or product. Conventional production methods are used but some research utilizes organic practices. A research plot technician is a person that is detailed orientated, motivated, takes pride in their work, and strives to see results. This person works hands-on with both agronomic and horticulture crops, operates, and maintains specialized equipment and works with research support staff to plant, maintain, collect data, and harvest all varieties of crops.

Major areas of responsibilities:

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this position and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this class.

Field plot management - 50%
1. Prepare research plots by laying out, measuring, marking, fertilizing, tillage, and planting
2. Scout and spray crops for weeds, insects, and disease
3. Cultivate, side-dress, hand- and mechanical-weeding of research plots
4. Assemble, set-up and maintain irrigation systems
5. Monitor research plots to determine irrigation needs; irrigate accordingly
6. Harvest (by implement or hand) and collect data from research plots
7. Collect and process soil and plant samples for on- or off-site analysis
8. Gain knowledge of how to manage and maintain crops.

Operate agricultural farm tractors and machinery - 25%
1. Calibrate and operate sprayers, planters, and fertilizing equipment
2. Prepare soil by using various implements as in cultivating, packing, and disking
3. Plant, fertilize and cultivate horticultural and agronomic crops
4. Spray crops for weed insect and disease control
5. Harvest crops using diggers, self-propelled harvesters, combines and other PTO-driven implements
6. Collect and process soil and plant samples for on- or off-site analysis
7. Use a variety of large, medium and small-scale equipment to plant, maintain and harvest plots.

Maintain Plot, Farm Equipment and Facilities - 10%
1. Grease, lubricate and perform light/routine maintenance on equipment
2. Make minor repairs
3. Record maintenance of equipment
4. Keep buildings and work areas neat
5. Mow grass, trim/pull weeds for neat appearance
6. Keep work areas neat and orderly
7. Assemble and organize storage areas for parts and supplies

Recordkeeping, Supplies and Parts - 10%
1. Collect data on cultural practices, growth, yield, planting, and harvest dates
2. Keep accurate records of field activities and pesticide applications
3. Inventory equipment, tools, supplies and parts
4. Order supplies and parts from various vendors

Other Duties - 5%
1. Assign tasks to temp/casual employees
2. Help maintain quality control to meet research objectives

Qualifications



Required Qualifications:
1. High school graduate/GED with two (2) years of education and/or experience in agriculture, horticulture, or related field.
2. A valid Minnesota Driver's License.
3. Ability to safely operate, service, and maintain field and lab equipment.
4. Must currently have or acquire a pesticide applicators license within 1 year.
5. Ability to perform essential functions under normal working conditions that include working outside with exposure to weather conditions common to Grand Rapids and in the presence of potential allergens and irritants (with appropriate safety equipment).
6. Ability to lift up to 50-70 pounds.
7. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and keep accurate records.
8. Detail-oriented in carrying out research projects.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. 4-year Agricultural related degree.
2. Understanding of low-voltage environmental control systems.
3. Experience in field plot research and communications.
4. Experience using Microsoft Excel and Google Suite.
