Responsibilities

The Islet Engineering and Replacement Laboratory (Director: Quinn Peterson, PhD) is seeking a motivated and driven colleague to join a team of basic and translational scientists in developing transformative new therapies and utilizing cutting edge approaches to elucidate new understanding of disease. The Islet Engineering and Replacement laboratory is focused on developing cell replacement therapies for type 1 diabetes and developing innovative new technologies to support basic and translational science in the use of stem cell derived islets for disease modeling, drug screening and islet biology.

Along with conducting laboratory research, this role involves logistical leadership of the projects and supporting other team members including research technologists, post-doctoral fellows, and students. The projects are geared directed differentiation of stem cells and the development of cell replacement therapies and related technologies especially in the contest of type 1 diabetes.  The preferred technical experience for this position is extensive experience in mammalian cell culture systems, flow cytometry, elisa assays, microscopy and experimental design.  Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with pluripotent stem cells and/or complex cell culture systems.

Organizational Relationships: Receives limited direction from PI and Supervisor. Is expected to work independently. Works cooperatively with other research staff in own and related labs. Interacts with vendors and others outside of Mayo Clinic as well as with other personnel from various departments within Mayo Clinic such as Research Administrative Services, Medical Graphics, Engineering, Facilities, Accounting, etc. Will manage progress on large-multi department/center projects between the research laboratory and resources in the Center for Regenerative Biotherapeutics.  Must be able to effectively manage people and relationships while maintaining a high level of productivity and collegiality.

Position Overview: (Major Functions and Non-Essential Functions): Oversees projects within the laboratory and assumes significant responsibility for the day-to-day operation of lab activities, including the design of research studies and experiments. Monitors results, responds to unusual outcomes; develops and implements modifications. Collects, enters analyzes, and interprets data. Possesses advanced knowledge of lab practices and directs and teaches others in lab practices. Provides leadership for lab operations and staff including coordinating resources and schedules. Serves as a mentor to lab staff. Possesses extensive knowledge in specialized field of study. Contributes significantly to grant proposals. Authors and coauthors publications. Presents at National Meetings.



Qualifications

Requires master's degree in biology, chemistry, other relevant science with 8 years of research laboratory experience, or a Bachelors degree and 10 years of relevant laboratory experience. Requires first authorship of a scientific publication as well as one presentation at a national level, or equivalent pre-requisite experience in a setting where this was not possible. Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or other relevant science preferred. Must have demonstrated abilities in experimental procedures, statistical analysis techniques, development of experiments, and troubleshooting in a laboratory setting. Requires ability to work independently; including experience providing independent oversight of research project(s). Must be able to work with a variety of people at all levels both within and outside of the institution.

Additional Experience and/or Qualifications: (Has Achieved Competency in the Following Areas, Job Knowledge and Additional Considerations): Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or other relevant science preferred. Must have demonstrated abilities in experimental procedures, statistical analysis techniques, development of experiments, and troubleshooting in a laboratory setting. Requires ability to work independently; including experience providing independent oversight of research project(s). Must be able to work with a variety of people at all levels both within and outside of the institution.
