Job Description:
This position manages the Materials Science and Technology Team within the Global Supply Chain Group. The successful candidate for this position will have experience in leading materials characterization projects, programs, or laboratories and hands on relationship building with key collaborators and stakeholders. Responsibilities include developing materials characterization programs and project objectives that differentiate product performance, accelerate product development and/or drive intellectual property protection in support of innovation and growth goals of the organization. This leader works in collaboration with internal customers in multiple business units and laboratories around the globe as well as with external partners. The group is divided into two segments: 1) Materials Science, which focuses on fundamental measurements and mechanistic understanding of materials, and 2) Technology Platforms, which focuses on development of new materials and formulations.
Core Responsibilities Include:
Execute materials science research programs in collaboration with business unit R&D teams that expand scientific understanding or new test methodologies which lead to accelerated product development for both PCG and GSC
Lead development of new materials platforms focused on Durability, Visual Appearance, and Application & Productivity
Create a materials science strategy with the Technical Director by identifying and building core capabilities and defining technology programs that add value or solve problems for our internal and external customers. Clearly articulate the plan to the technical teams to align objectives.
Manage professional and technical research and development personnel at multiple locations, including Minneapolis and Cleveland in the development of capabilities and formulation guidelines to enable the design of coatings with exceptional application and cured film performance
Oversee and/or serve as the primary contact and respond to highly technical and complex questions and concerns from customers, research professionals, quality control, and other internal and external parties regarding development and related programs and services. Present results and plans to internal and external customers
Actively participate in direct customer engagement collaboratively with the BU R&D and marketing teams to better define the needs of external customers and translate those into materials science projects which target better test methods and new coating performance insights to accelerate the product development process
Develop and Foster a global materials science capability roadmap and Global Materials Science Network for the Performance Coatings Group and Global Supply Chain laboratories. Build and strengthen relationships across laboratories, promote information and knowledge exchange, identify the needs of capability\method development and build and execute a plan for deploying these capabilities. Deliver training and establish best practices in these labs to accelerate product development
Establish and build relationships with external partners (universities, suppliers, instrument manufactures, etc.) to compliment internal capabilities and enhance results
Develop project objectives, which includes proposed budgets, timelines, materials, personnel, determining project feasibility, and other project requirements, and receives management approval
Partnering with the IP, legal, and R&D teams, serve as the global materials science lead to build a purposeful IP strategy into the product development process. Provide training across functions, regions and businesses to leverage materials science in drafting IP claims for competitive advantage and support the teams on drafting those claims with materials science insights. Read and interpret patents, examine new product concepts and technology, and determine how to meet customer needs and market demands
Lead the global formulation data science working group to build the roadmap for the "lab of the future" across all businesses and functions and work with the R&D teams to evaluate new capabilities for modeling, informatics, and automation that accelerate new product development
Utilize and develop new materials science methodologies to conduct proof of concept projects that determine the potential of new materials and technologies for application across different businesses and market segments.
Showcase proof of concept of new materials that are differentiated, scalable, and leverageable across businesses
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
FORMAL EDUCATION:
Required:
* Must have a bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics ("STEM") field
Preferred:
* Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or related field
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
Required:
* Must have at least 7 years of supervisory experience (project management or people management) within R&D or Quality
* 8+ years experience working in analytical labs in an industrial setting, or translatable experience
* Must be able to communicate in a clear, concise professional manner internally and externally to identify and build productive collaborations and partnerships.
Preferred:
* Breadth of technology and technique experience
* Experience leading analytical lab personnel
* Experience in analytical labs that support coatings technology
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: 30%
