Position Summary
The Reference Associate assists library patrons with reference inquiries, research assistance, and information retrieval. This role involves guidance on using library resources, answering reference questions, and conducting literary searches. The associate may also assist in maintaining reference materials, creating research guides, and contributing to library programming and outreach efforts. Strong communication skills, a service-oriented approach, and familiarity with library systems and research tools are essential for success in this role.
Essential Functions
Greets patrons and provides proactive assistance at the public service desk/phone
Provides reader advisory service with the guidance of Reference Librarians
Helps patrons navigate the library catalog and databases
Helps patrons with general reference and tech assistance
Routinely re-shelves reference materials
Processes materials, handles holds
May contribute to the Library District's reference services by posting articles to the Library's blog, may assist in the upkeep of social media or other services
Performs public speaking, programming, and tours with the guidance of Reference Librarians
Provides handoff to various other specialists when appropriate
Assists in maintaining and merchandising the branch collection
Promotes library services, programs & offerings
Acts as PIC (Person In Charge) -will be the acting building manager as assigned to handling safety and security matters as they arise
Serves as Passport Acceptance Agent when certified, in branches where service is offered
Assists participants of all ages at the Computer Training Center and Maker Space when assigned to the Midtown Carnegie Branch
Performs set-up, assists and/or instructs training sessions and presents programs when assigned to the Midtown Carnegie Branch
Interprets and implements the Librarys General Conduct Policy
Consistently punctual for work and meetings. Completes assigned duties in a timely manner.
Exemplifies professional attitude and demeanor while engaging constituents, including the ability to work and interact with others in a cooperative, pleasant, and constructive manner.

Skills/Job Knowledge
Excellent communication skills both oral and written
Working knowledge of ready reference tools
Computer and keyboard skills
Knowledge and appreciation of literature
Ability to follow extremely detailed instructions and complete tasks accurately
Education/Experience
Position requires a BS/BA degree in a related field
One-year public service experience preferred
Public library experience desired
Contact
Daily in-person and telephone contact with the public
Works closely with other library personnel
Contact with all system departments and branches
Supervision
Supervised by Reference Department Manager
Physical Demands
Performs bending, squatting, kneeling, and reaching from floor level to 6 feet in height
Routine lifting of library materials weighing up to 30 lbs.
Displays good coordination and mobility
Working Environment
Primarily in-doors with heating and cooling regulated in a general library environment
Miscellaneous Requirements
Must pass a security background check
